11 island federations united through ESIN 11 island federations from land, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Sweden 1,640 small, very small or tiny islands united by a definition of a small island as one which has a maximum of 5,000 inhabitants has no fixed link to the mainland is below NUTS coverage has less than 1,000 km2 dry area has in most cases no jurisdiction on its own
The ESIN Atlas responds to a need The ESIN Atlas is a draft in progress Its aim is to describe these small and sometimes tiny islands 360,000 islanders live there 3 million people used them as summer homes Over 30 million visitors used them as a holiday resort Yet they are not as visible as they could be in terms of data and statistics.
Towards a sustainable island future Small islands lack common, comparable data on their present sustainability level and their measurable development capacity. They need this data in order to develop energy, freshwater and waste systems, tourism, agriculture, fishing and transport in a sustainable way.
