The McGill First Generation Orientation event, organized by Campus Life & Engagement, took place on August 31st, 2021. The event highlighted the importance of supporting first-generation students and fostering allyship with Indigenous communities. It featured various sessions including introductions, peer support discussions, student panels, and social activities. The event aimed to provide resources, support, and a sense of belonging to first-generation students at McGill.

Land Acknowledgment Although we are located in many different spaces today, McGill is located on unceded Indigenous lands in Tiohti :ke/Montreal, which was originally founded by the Kanien keh :ka Nation. As settlers, our presence on this land contributes to the dispossession and ongoing oppression of Indigenous peoples. Our goal is to promote learning and promote allyship with local Indigenous communities, by honouring and respecting the many nations removed from, as well as those still connected to this land.

Who We Are The First Generation Student Support project is an initiative out of the Office of the Provost, headed by the Associate Provost (Equity & Academic Policies), Prof. Angela Campbell, in collaboration with Campus Life & Engagement (CL&E) and many first-generation students. We aim to support first-generation students throughout their time here at McGill as well as celebrate their major milestones.

  7. Who is a First-Generation student? Many definitions! A student whose parents or care-givers did not complete a four-year, postsecondary degree. This can include: Students whose parents did not complete a four-year degree in Canada or the United States. Students who are or were youth in care.
