  5. Planning faculty are special! A professional degree makes our job different than that of many professors. We are scholars actively engaged with practice. Our department has grown substantially in recent years with hires from a variety of disciplines sociology, political science, geography, history, and communication.   6. Planning Governance Organizations American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP): Professional licensing org. Certification requires a degree from an accredited planning program, several years of experience, and an examination. Planning Accreditation Board (PAB): Determines which programs count for AICP by reviewing our many aspects of the curriculum (next slide) American Planning Association (APA): Advances planning through leadership in education, research, advocacy, and ethical practice organizes conferences, journals, chapters, events, student membership. Accredited Planning Programs Core Curriculum must include: - General Planning Knowledge: Purpose and Meaning of Planning, Planning Theory, Planning Law, Human Settlements and History of Planning, The Future, and Global Dimensions of Planning - Planning skills: Research, Written, Oral, and Graphic Communication, Quantitative and Qualitative Methods, Plan Creation and Implementation, Planning Process Methods, and Leadership - Values and Ethics: Professional Ethics and Responsibility, Governance and Participation, Sustainability and Environmental Quality, Growth and Development, and Social Justice - Specializations and Electives 7 MURP Orientation: Nuts and Bolts September 22, 2021 Department of Urban Planning

Environmental Analysis and Policy (EAP) 4. Regional and International Development (RID) Regional Economic Development (RED) International Development (ID) 5. MURP Requirements: Fieldwork 1 Option 1 (for those without extensive professional planning experience) - Complete at least 300 hours of professional planning fieldwork (internship) - Enroll in four units of UP 496 (Independent Fieldwork) during the quarter immediately following the internship - Submit an essay on your experience and a performance evaluation from your supervisor 14 MURP Orientation: Nuts and Bolts September 22, 2021 Department of Urban Planning

MURP Requirements: Fieldwork 2 Option 2 (for those with extensive professional planning experience) - Petition to waive the requirement - With at least 12 months of full-time professional experience at a responsible level prior to entering the program - Submit a 6- to 10-page detailed description of your professional planning work along with your resume - You receive no course credit for waiving the requirement, so you must take an additional elective course to meet the total unit requirement 15 MURP Orientation: Nuts and Bolts September 22, 2021 Department of Urban Planning

MURP Requirements: Capstones Option 1: Applied Planning Research Project (APRP) Work with a faculty adviser and an outside client on a research project Enroll in APRP courses in fall and winter of second year Option 2: Academic thesis Independent research project under guidance of three faculty Enroll in research design class in spring, research proposal class in fall, and in independent study units in the winter 16 MURP Orientation: Nuts and Bolts September 22, 2021 Department of Urban Planning

MURP Requirements: Capstones Option 3: Comprehensive Project Group (studio) project under faculty guidance for an outside client Ordinarily two offered, including one Community Collaborative All students (~12) work on different aspects of the same larger project Enroll in two project courses (either fall/winter or winter/spring) Fallback: A two-week examination is available as a fall back option only. 17 MURP Orientation: Nuts and Bolts September 22, 2021 Department of Urban Planning

  19. Racial Justice Working Group - Created during the summer of 2020, produced a report with several recommendations that have been implemented since then.
