Aims and objectives To show the level of impunity regarding acid attacks on women in Nigeria
Case details 26 year old medicine vendor in town in Ebonyi State joined a local thrift contribution system When she was due to benefit from the scheme, some money she kept in her room was stolen and she confronted N who was seen coming out of her room by a neighbour N had previously been turned down by her when he made a romantic approach Eventually under threat of spiritual punishment N admitted stealing the money and was publicly disgraced
Case details A few days later around 4am, N calls on her and pours sulphuric acid on her face and that of her 2 siblings The family had to sell off parcels of land to pay for hospital treatment where they spent over 20 months N was arrested, detained but subsequently released by the Police N is still openly threatening to kill her She has not been able to visit her mother in the village as a result of which her mother has developed a psychological illness B has lost her left ear and most of the vision in her right ear as well as losing all the hair on her left scalp as a result of the acid burns
Learning points The story shows clearly efforts at self-empowerment by B.U. through the local thrift system used as a savings scheme called Isusu The system of distributive wealth is shown through the fact that B.U was supporting her younger sister, who lived with her The aspect of the level of impunity is evident through the fact that the perpetrator is still walking around free in the community The impact of violence on close family members is often ignored. In this case not only B.U. s two sisters were injured, but the incident still affects her mother psychologically
