We travelled by car. We crossed the Channel in a ferry. The book belongs to Marcus. The door of the house is red. What is a preposition? Prepositions are words which describe the position of something, the time when something happens and the way in which something is done. The prepositions of, to and for have some additional functions they can be used form something else. Time How something is done Possession These are very simple examples; you can be very ambitious with prepositional phrases.

Prepositions describe the relationship between the subject of a sentence and another object. Examples: The apple was under the table. The glider flew through the air.   6. Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase includes the object that the preposition in a sentence is referring to and any other words that link it to the preposition. For example: He hid beneath the duvet. A prepositional phrase usually includes a preposition, a noun or pronoun and may include an adjective. It does not include the verb!
