Due to the large width of ribs and the subsequently narrower intercostal space, resection of one or more ribs may be necessary to make surgery at the thorax. The thorax cavity in cow shorter than in horse . NUMBER OF RIBS IN SOME ANIMALS: NUMBER OF RIBS IN SOME ANIMALS: Cow: 13 pairs Horse: 18 or 19 pairs - Sheep & Goat: 13 pairs. Dogs & Cats: 13 pairs - Human: 12 pairs.
Indications Rib resection is indicated for many surgical procedures : Osteosarcoma. Chondrosarcoma. Fracture of rib.
Surgical procedure Surgical procedure Make an elliptical incision, through the skin and subcutaneous layers, over the lesion. Incise the overlying musculature through its full thickness, circumferentially 3 cm. away from the edges of the lesion. Incise the intercostal musculature cranial to and caudal to the segment which will be resected.
