Analysis of Roller Number and Binder Content Effects in Paving Operations

The study examines the impact of varying roller numbers and binder content on asphalt density profiles. Findings reveal that the addition of a fifth roller along with increased binder content resulted in the highest density.   7. Veta Thermal Past Thermal Data was judged on Max vs. Min Expert System ( Randy is his name) became very good at recognizing patterns relating to specific bad field practices. Geospatial Data Analysis ( thanks Bruce ) now recognizes many of these patterns Current MnDOT incentive/disincentive specification is based upon eliminating patterns and temperature deviations that relate to poor practices Segregation is not a significant concern in Minnesota anymore 9/19/2024 mndot.gov 7

  8. Intelligent Construct not just Quality Control Standard Specification States the Contractor can not provide material that does not meet quality requirements. Example Project: Core Densities were mostly below specification Veta IC data proved that the breakdown roller was not keeping pace with the paver. Contractor instructed to fix his process; proceeding would be unauthorized work. Contractor provided another roller. Example Project: Heavy rains created saturated stockpiles. Thermal data bouncing all over. Contractor instructed to provide thermally uniform mat. Contractor chose to shut down and move to neighboring state since, they don t have thermal over there. 9/19/2024 mndot.gov 8

  9. Veta An Expert System Currently we are evaluating thermal data in a way that spots poor paving (and trucking and plant ) practices. IC Roller Data (Temperature, Passes, Speed, Stiffness, Vibe On) can be correlated to in place density or dielectric. Targeting parameters such as minimum number of passes prior to the temperature dropping below a set minimum does relate to pavement quality. Dielectric is importable into Veta 9/19/2024 mndot.gov 9
