SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT The subject of a sentence is the actor/idea of a sentence. The verb is the action or state of being of the subject. Subjects and verbs need to agree in number, which is known as singular or plural. A Subject-Verb Agreement Error occurs when the subject and verb of a sentence do not agree in number. Today we will discuss some of the important rules of subject verb agreement.
SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT A singular subject takes a singular verb whereas a plural subject takes a plural verb. Example: The list of items is/are on the desk.
SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT Don t get confused by the words that come between the subject and verb; they do not affect agreement. Example: The dog, who is chewing on my jeans, is usually very good.
SUBJECT VERB AGREEMENT Prepositional phrases between the subject and verb usually do not affect agreement. The colors of the rainbow are beautiful.
