Curtin UniReady in Schools Program
The UniReady Enabling Program is an alternate entry to university pathway run by Curtin University. When completed successfully, it will provide students with a notional ATAR of 70 and English competency (Curtin s minimum entry requirements for undergraduate courses).
In 2021, at CJSC, the program is available to year 12 students. The program will be run over two gridlines. Each unit will contribute to a student s WACE (max. 4 points).
UniReady Core Units Fundamentals of Academic Writing (Semester One) Foundations of Communication (Semester Two) The focus of this unit is learning about the skills needed to be able to write successfully at university level. Students will also gain a strong understanding of university protocols. Content of this unit includes reading critically, plagiarism, academic integrity, paraphrasing and referencing, all in the context of developing essay writing skills. The focus of this unit is communication, specifically, looking at different ways of communicating information for different audiences and purposes. Students will learn about email etiquette, group work, infographics, blogging, online communication and public speaking.
UniReady Elective Units Applying Mathematics (Semester One) This unit aims to develop a core set of numeracy skills that will aid students in further study - particularly in Health Sciences and Business. Students will be introduced to a variety of mathematical concepts from basic numerical to statistical to financial, and to their real-life applications in Health Sciences and Business. The unit begins with numeracy skills before moving on to cover univariate statistics, bivariate statistics, algebra and functions. Introduction to Health Sciences (Semester Two) This unit will provide students with a basic understanding of some of the human anatomy and physiology components of an undergraduate Health Sciences program. This includes an overview of the structure and function of human anatomy and physiology, focused on musculo- skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, digestive, endocrine and immune systems. Human cell biology and homeostasis will also be investigated.
University courses The UniReady Program provides entry to a range of undergraduate courses at Curtin University. A complete list can be found on their website: https://study.curtin.edu.au/applying/pathways/uniready-enabling- program/ Other universities also accept this program for entry to some undergraduate courses check with the universities.
UniReady students: Have clear aspirations to go to university. Have a plan for what they d like to study in the future.
UniReady students: Are dedicated and hardworking. Take ownership of their learning. Are self-motivated. Are able to work without influence from others. Show consistent effort and persistence. Are resilient, and can cope in difficult times and with adversity.
UniReady students: Have sound literacy skills and can achieve success in year 11 English (ATAR or General). Listen to teacher feedback, and act on it to improve their learning. Often do well in class assessments, but may not do well on exams.
UniReady students: Attend school, and classes, regularly 85%-90% minimum.
Who is it for? The UniReady Program is NOT intended as a replacement for ATAR, or for students who will achieve an ATAR above the minimum (70). but for students who: are MA, haven t been at school for a while, and are returning to year 12 to gain uni entry may not get an ATAR that gives them uni entry may be studying General courses, but want to go to uni are achieving Bs in General courses, or Cs in ATAR courses would benefit from additional uni-readiness skills. It s a good medium between ATAR and General courses, and is a good option for students who genuinely want to go to uni, but who won t get an ATAR, or one that doesn t give them uni entry.
How to apply: 1. Select UniReady as part of your course selection. 2. Submit a short statement explaining; i. why you want to complete the UniReady program ii. what you want to study at uni iii. your career goals iv. how you have, and will, demonstrate/d your commitment and application to your study. 3. Attend a selection meeting i. bring evidence of your recent academic achievement and attendance (school report/s).
