You are not special

You are not special
Approaching your career with the humility success demands
by Chude Jideonwo
Everyone is special
I praise you, for I am fearfully and
wonderfully made
Psalm 139: 14
We want (or are expected) to
achieve this…
But what happens to most of us is
this…
How do we get from expectations
and potential to reality?
First things to note
On your career journey, you won’t be happy everyday
There are no shortcuts
From happiness to joy:
Why do we
need Joy?
Pew Research
24%
 of Millennials considered
themselves responsible
27%
 of Millennials considered
their generation self-reliant
17%
 considered themselves
moral
29%
 considered themselves
compassionate

Don’t follow your passion
Like marriage, work is not based on love or passion. It is a
series of practical decisions (career growth, etc)
Money matters. Don’t romanticize poverty.
The art of the ‘suck-up’
Have a spirit of service.
"
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it
for good in order to bring about this present result, to
preserve many people alive

– Genesis 50:20
Take charge of your career
Management is for everybody. Manage ‘down’ and ‘up’.
Your career doesn’t belong to your supervisor, or Human
Resources. It belongs to you.
Finding a job
Every day, there are vacancies available for those with
the right skills.
In South Africa, there is a gap of between 20,000 and
70,000 people in ICT.
The National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan
17,000 engineers and technicians needed in the power sector
300,000 in the ICT sector
1,000,000 in the transport sector
Finding a job
The waitress who became a self-taught digital marketer
A basic competency gap: PAs, etc.
Dignity in all labour.
Peer pressure, like hope, is not a career building strategy
The one-company (wo)man
There is always a place for those who can help others
build wide ranging visions
Don’t change jobs for the sake of it.
Jacob worked for Laban for years and became very
powerful
Final thoughts
Take ownership wherever you are.
‘The cult of entrepreneurship’.
Don’t give in to blackmail and fear about whether to be
an employee or to start a business. Just take common
sense steps.
