Optimising Performance on the Day A key strategic pillar for Athletics Australia is to ensure our athletes can deliver close to their best performance when it matter at the major Championships We measure our success in this by the number of athletes at or above 99% of their Season s Best at the World Under-20 Championships Three key pillars: Long-term months and years before Medium-term weeks before Travel, environmental changes, taper, acute injuries and illnesses Change from normal - including boredom management! Short-term day before and day of competition Performing with pressure, warm up, nutritional support, recovery, tactics Coach athlete communication stress contagion, sabotage What can you do now to set yourself up for success in Lima? Adam athletics.com.au
Pre-Departure Camp Gold Coast, June 20th 23rd Goals for athletes: Develop team building relationships with other athletes and staff, especially team coach Undertake relay practice Complete medical screening Receive specific education around key issues Adam athletics.com.au
Pre-Competition Camp Given the extensive travel and time change, our preference is to get to Lima at least 7 days prior to the competition beginning. The USA is a potential option for a pre-competition camp however, it is much hotter than Lima, and also requires at least a 5 hour flight to get to Lima prior to the competition. As such, we are exploring training camp options in Lima for the team. Miles athletics.com.au
Cost AA are heavily subsiding the cost of travel and competition for all athletes. At present, the levy costs are likely to be in the region of $5,500 although this is still being finalized and subject to change. Financial support is often available from state governments, school/university, or the Australian Sport Commission (e.g., Local Sporting Champions). We don t ever want cost to be a reason an athlete doesn t attend, so in the case of genuine financial hardship we can work with you on a solution. Miles athletics.com.au
Travel Flight from Australia to Lima (via Santiago) = ~22 hours Athletes will travel back to Australia as a group. Athletes who have parents in Lima will be dismissed into parental care at the conclusion of the competition if they are travelling further with their parents. Athletes will need to let Athletics Australia know (via email) whether they are being dismissed into parental care, if they want a one-way flight to be booked for them (reduced levy) or need a return flight booked for them with the team. This needs to be done by early May 2024 so start thinking now! Is your passport valid until the beginning of March 2025? Miles athletics.com.au
Post-Selection / Planning Key things to consider: Being away from home: How will you handle a foreign environment. - Culture - Lifestyle - Transport You will have a roommate what if they snore/are loud? You will have a lot of free time what will you do? Do you need to continue with school/university work? How do you maintain your nutritional requirements - Travel with some staple items - Prepare for a variety of foods. - Know your requirements. How will you keep in contact with friends and family, whilst minimising the disruption to your preparation? Extra walking at the Championships how will you prepare? There are no pre-departure standards; prepare yourself to perform if you need help, ask the appointed team coach. What will your Plan be look like between nationals and the World Under-20 Championships? Number of competitions Training plan Taper How will you handle the travel/time-change and being away for 3 weeks? Who is your team coach? Start to make contact and discuss your plans. Do you need a plan for school/university work? What could go wrong? What are you doing to protect against this? What are your plans B and C? Is the travel insurance cover sufficient for your needs? Check and review. How will you pay the levy? Do you need to do any external fund raising? - - - - Adam athletics.com.au
FAQ Selection I can t compete at Nationals in the Under-20 event what do I do? Can parents / family travel to Lima for the competition? Can personal coaches access the warm-up and competition areas? What is the minimum age that you can qualify for the World U20 and is it a requirement for a parent/guardian to accompany the athlete? There seem to be some security concerns in Lima at the moment. Is there a risk assessment process? Is there any likelihood the Champs won't be held, or held at a different city? Is vaccination status going to be an issue? Is there adequate time for year 12 students to study for their upcoming exams while away? Logistics Miles athletics.com.au
