  3. Danger Signs Danger signs are used to indicate immediate danger and that special precautions are necessary. Danger signs are usually red, black and white normally with room for words or symbols. Employees should be given training regarding signs and the importance of heeding all of them especially danger signs! PPT-115-01 3

  4. Warning Signs Warning signs are normally orange and contain black lettering or symbols. Used to warn against hazards that aren t quite as serious as those requiring a danger sign, but are more serious than those requiring caution signs. PPT-115-01 4

  5. Caution Signs Caution signs normally have a yellow background with black letters. Used to warn against potential hazards or to caution against unsafe practices. PPT-115-01 5

  6. Safety Signs Safety signs usually have a white background with a green panel and white letters. Letters used against the white background should be black. Used where there is a need for general instructions and suggestions relative to safety measures. PPT-115-01 6

  7. Special Signs Special signs such as biohazard signs are normally fluorescent orange or orange-red with letters and symbols of contrasting colors. Biohazard signs alert employees that infectious agents with a risk of death, injury or illness are present . Radiation signs contain the three bladed radiation symbol in black or magenta or red on a yellow background. PPT-115-01 7

  8. Signs Employees should be able to read and understand posted signs especially if English is not their primary language. Employees should not remove any signs posted unless authorized by their Supervisor to do so. Signs should not be defaced or otherwise damaged (this includes writing on them). Damaged or unreadable signs should be removed and replaced as soon as possible. PPT-115-01 8

  9. Summary There are many different signs that can be present in a workplace which denote different hazard levels. Employees should become familiar with and understand the different signs used. Employees who do not understand the meaning of any sign should contact their Supervisor. PPT-115-01 9
