Copernicus Downstream Service -
close to the users 
– they are using
Copernicus data and services in
various sectors of application
The notion of 
user assistance

training to support for operational
service is omnipresent : [50%] more
than half of the examples of
achievements mentioned by these
women are related to services or
support dedicated to users
This survey confirms the existence of gender
bias perceived during studies and careers
Even with 
high education 
(more than
50% PhD), 
high expertise 
(around 4/5),
excellent technical skills 
(more than 4/5)
the hierarchical level of these women is
not high 
(around 3/5). 
Still difficult to be a woman in
Copernicus
These women are proud of the results
they obtained by data-processing,
however only a few of them claim to be
experts or to be proud of their high
technical skills level
Being a minority is still the main barrier
identified by the women taking this survey
These women, with education in STEM (more
than 75%), are identifying the barriers for the
girls in choosing this kind of education :  
stereotypes, 
imbalances in gender figures, 
missing role-models and 
the messages transmitted in
culture/television 
but also the lack of confidence
mentioned by a lot of them.
How to improve the Copernicus system
They proposed tools and solutions for changing the gender bias: 
Identify and give visibility to 
role models 
but also to all existing
women as part of the system
Mentoring
 system (men and women but with empathy and
listening), 
Empathy
 in the management and 
team working
Virtual places to talk, listen and share > 
networks of Women
open to men but really dedicated to exchange personal
experiences and expertise … "close to human beings closer to
Copernicus users"
Psychological support 
to increase self-confidence of women:
International connections 
and holistic vision: link to in-situ, link to
other projects > real use of Copernicus
Implementation of policies 
aimed at achieving  gender
balance in the workplace

Women in Copernicus consortium has successfully conducted a survey aiming to bring visibility to women in the Copernicus program. With 475 participants, the initial results indicate a gender bias in the workplace and a strong desire to contribute towards a more gender-balanced environment. The project seeks to inspire girls and women by highlighting the stories and challenges of women in the field, ultimately aiming to empower and elevate the role of women in Copernicus.
