Warning Against Rote Traditionalism: Insights from John and Isaiah

Rote – Rut –
Rot!

The Terrible Triplets of Traditionalism
John 3:1-10

There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a
ruler of the Jews.
2
This man came to Jesus by night and
said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher
come from God; for no one can do these signs that You
do unless God is with him.”
3
 Jesus answered and said
to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born
again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4
 Nicodemus
said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old?
Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and
be born?”
5
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to
you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he
cannot enter the kingdom of God.
John 3:1-10

6
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7
 “Do not
marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born
again.’
8
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you
hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes
from and where it goes. So is everyone who is
born of the Spirit.”
9
 Nicodemus answered and said
to Him, “How can these things be?”
10
 Jesus
answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of
Israel, and do not know these things?
Rote, In Our Worship

Jesus blamed the Pharisees for making
God’s Word
void by tradition,
 Matt. 15:8-9
“Teaching as doctrines the commandments of
men” (Matt. 15:9b)
“And their fear toward Me is taught by the
commandment of men.” (Isaiah)
“And their reverence of me consists of tradition
learned by
rote.
” (ASV)
Rote, In Our Worship

Israel’s reverence for God was…
Based on human tradition
Learned by
rote
“Lamentation and condemnation of
hypocritical ceremonial worship,
without
living faith or any striving after holiness,
had been a leading theme of prophecy.”
Delitzsch
Isaiah Warned of Vain Worship

Isaiah 1:11-18
“To what purpose
is
the multitude of your sacrifices to
Me?” says the Lord. “I have had enough of burnt
offerings of rams and the fat of fed cattle. I do not
delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs or goats.
12
When you come to appear before Me, who has
required this from your hand, to trample My courts?
13
Bring no more futile sacrifices; incense is an
abomination to Me. The New Moons, the Sabbaths, and
the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and
the sacred meeting.”
Isaiah Warned of Vain Worship

Isaiah 1:11-18
“14
Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; they
are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing
them
.
15
 When you
spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; even though
you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of
blood.
“16
Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean; put away the evil of
your doings from before My eyes. Cease to do evil,
17
 learn to do
good; seek justice, rebuke the oppressor; defend the fatherless,
plead for the widow.”
18
“Come now, and let us reason together”,
says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as
white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall be as
wool.”
Jeremiah Blamed Idolatry on
Defective Worship

Jeremiah 2:5-6
“Thus says the Lord: ‘What injustice have your fathers
found in Me, that they have gone far from Me, have
followed idols, and have become idolaters? Neither did
they say, “Where
is
the Lord, Who brought us up out of
the land of Egypt, Who led us through the wilderness,
Through a land of deserts and pits, Through a land of
drought and the shadow of death, Through a land that
no one crossed and where no one dwelt?’”
Jeremiah Blamed Idolatry on
Defective Worship

Jeremiah 2:13-14
“For My people have committed two evils: they
have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
and
 hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns
that can hold no water.
Is
 Israel a servant?
Is
 he
a homeborn
slave
? Why is he plundered?”
Rote

1:
The use of memory usually with little
intelligence.
2:
 Routine or repetition carried
out without understanding.
Spiritual stagnation is the result of
rote!
Rut, Of The Mind

Easy to permit the mind to go into a rut
Only difference between a
rut
 and a
grave
is that the grave has an end!
Rut
