SYLLABUS: Cycle 1 Chapter 1: Large Numbers Chapter 2: Addition
RECAPITUALTION Read and write 4 digit numbers Place Value and Face value Expanded form Successor and Predecessor Forming greatest and smallest 4 digit number Comparing numbers
PLACE VALUE & FACE VALUE Place value is the value of each digit in a number based on its position Face value is the digit itself regardless of its position in the number Example: Let s find the place value and face value of digits in the number 7,945
Place value Chart We use the place value chart to read and write numbers Hundreds Tens Ones Thousands
Expanded Form Hundreds Tens Ones 200 30 5 Expanded Form: Writing a number as the sum of the place value of its digits i.e 200 + 30 + 5 = 235
How Many? Ones Tens Hundreds 200 + 30 + 7 300 + 20 + 7 700 + 30 + 2
Hundreds Tens Ones 243 423 234
Thousands Tens Ones Hundreds 1000 1000 + 200 + 40 + 3 200 40 3 1,243
Thousands Tens Ones Hundreds 2000 2000 + 300 + 20 + 5 300 20 2,325 5
Which number shows three thousand six hundred eighty two in standard form? 3, 862 6,382 3, 682 3, 286
Which number is the word name for 6,112? seven hundred twelve six thousand twenty-one six thousand one hundred twelve six thousand one hundred two
Which number is the word name for 1,423? One thousand four hundred thirty three One thousand three hundred forty three One thousand two hundred thirty two One thousand four hundred twenty three
FORMING GREATEST AND SMALLEST NUMBERS Greatest 4 digit numbers: Arrange the digits in descending order Smallest 4 digit numbers: Arrange the digits in ascending order. If any of the digits is 0 we put it in the hundreds place Example 1: Form greatest and smallest 4 digit number using the digits 6,1,5,9 Greatest Number:Smallest Number: Th H T 9 6 5 o 1 Th 9 H 6 T 5 o 1 Example 2: Form smallest 4 digit number using the digits 7,0,1,8 Smallest Number: 1 0 7 8 Th H T o
SUCCESSOR & PREDECESSOR Successor: A number that comes just after a given number is called its successor. Successor = Given Number + 1 Example : i. Successor of 3459 is 3459 + 1= 3460 ii. Successor of 9999 is 9999 + 1= 10,000 ( 10,000 is the smallest 5 Digit number) Predecessor: A number that comes just before a given number is called its predecessor. Predecessor = Given Number - 1 Example : i. Predecessor of 2678 is 2678 - 1= 2677 ii. Predecessor of 10,000 is 10,000 - 1= 9999 ( 9999 is the greatest 4 Digit number)
COMPARING NUMBERS Rule 1: DIFFERENT NUMBER OF DIGITS If two or more numbers to be compared do not have the same number of digits, the number with more number of digits is greater. Example 3456 > 456 Rule 2 : SAME NUMBER OF DIGITS When the number of digits is the same in two numbers, then we start comparing the first digit from left in each number. If it is the same in both the numbers, we move to the second digit, and so on. Example: 3456 > 3356 3356 > 3346 3346 > 3336 and so on.
Home Assignment: 1. Write the number name: i. 6732 ii. 9999 2. Write the expanded form of the number 2609 3. Write the successor of the following: i. 1196 ii. 6279 4.
