  1. + Rule 8 SCORING September 19, 2016 Scott Young

  2. +Section 1. Value of Scores Touchdown 6 points Field Goal 3 points Safety 2 points Successful Try Touchdown 2 points Field Goal or Safety 1 point **The score of a forfeited game shall be 1-0. If the offended team is ahead at the time of the forfeit, the score stands.

  3. +SECTION 2: TOUCHDOWN!! HOW SCORED: A touchdown shall be scored when - A ball carrier has possession of the ball when it breaks the plane of the goal line. - A player catches a forward pass in the opponents end zone. - A fumble or backwards pass is caught or recovered in opponents end zone. A free kick or scrimmage kick is legally caught or recovered in the opponents end zone.

  4. +Touchdown plays A ball carrier is advancing in the field of play, becomes airborne at the two yard line. His first contact with the ground is out of bounds three yards beyond the goal line. As he flew through the air, the ball remained in his possession and passed over the pylon. A ball carrier heads for the right hand pylon, at the B-2 he dives for the end zone. The ball is in his right hand and crosses the sideline at the 1 yard line and passes outside the pylon but the ball carriers left hand (or foot) touches the pylon. ** IF YOU ARE NOT AT THE PYLON- IT DOES NOT LOOK GOOD!

  5. + Touchdown The ball in possession of airborne ball carrier crosses the sideline above the 1 yard line, continues beyond the pylon and is then declared dead out of bounds in the ball carrier s possession. (Goal line not extended) The ball carrier is hit and his forward progress is stopped inbounds near the goal line. When he is stopped he has the ball in his right hand extended beyond the goal line outside the pylon. (no part of the runner has hit the end zone or the pylon)

  6. +Section 3: Try Down A try is an opportunity for either team to score while the clock is stopped. A special interval in the game which, for purposes of penalty enforcement only, includes both the down and the ready period that precedes it. (Try begins when the ball is declared ready) Team can select where to snap from prior to the ready. The ball can be relocated after a team B foul or a timeout by either team. (Exception: If team A fouls (or off setting fouls) they can not relocate the ball after a timeout.

  7. +A few Approved Rulings 8-3-2 On a one point try, the kick is blocked and picked up Behind the neutral zone and advanced into the end zone (TD) OR Beyond the neutral zone and advanced in the end zone. (Dead at spot of recovery) On a try attempt, B2 adds new impetus to a Team A fumble that is recovered in the team B end zone by Team B (Safety) On a try, A1 muffs the snap and A2 recovers the ball and advances into the end zone. (TD) Don t forget that the 4thDown Fumble Rule applies on the try.

  8. +Fouls During the Try Offsetting fouls- replay the try~ Fouls by Team B during the try - If try is successful, Team A can decline the penalty and take the points or accept the penalty and replay the try. (Personal Fouls and USC s can be accepted and enforced on the kick off.) Fouls by Team A during the try - After a successful try, enforce the penalty and repeat the try. If Team A commits a penalty that includes LOD, the try is over with no yardage on the kick off.

  9. +Fouls During the Try Dead ball enforcement - Penalties occuring after the ready and before the snap are enforced before the snap. - Penalties for live ball fouls treated as dead ball fouls are enforced on the kick off unless the try is replayed. -Roughing/Running into the kicker are live ball fouls - Kick Catch Interference is declined by rule and any score by A is cancelled.

  10. +Section 4 Field Goal A field goal is scored if a drop kick or place kick passes over the cross bar and between the uprights. This must be a scrimmage kick not a free kick! Next Play: - If Good: Kick off If No Good Previous spot or 20 yardline ** If ball does not cross NZ or if B touches beyond the NZ- all scrimmage kick rules apply. **If ball crosses NZ untouched by B, regular scrimmage kick rules apply.

  11. +A few FG Plays 4thand 8 on Team B s 40. Team A s attempted FG touches B1 at the 10 yard line and goes out of bounds at the 5. 1stand 10 Team B at the 5 4thand 8 on Team B s 40. Team A s attempted FG touches the ground a the 3 yard line and bounces into the end zone where it is received in the air by team B and downed. Touchback Team A s unsuccessful field goal attempt strikes the ground beyond the NZ and bounces back across the NZ where it is recovered by B1 and advanced to the EZ. TOUCHDOWN

  12. +Section 5 Safety It is a safety when the ball becomes dead out of bounds behind a goal line and the team defending that end zone is responsible for the ball being there. Next put in play from the 20 as a free kick (punt, drop or place kick) When in doubt, it is a touchback not a safety. Momentum Exception Starts at the 5 yard line, interception, fumble recovery and kick catch, ball must remain in the end zone and be declared dead in the player s possession. (The original momentum must carry him into the EZ)

  13. +Plays to think about B1 intercepts a pass at his own 3 yard line and his momentum carries him into the EZ. He runs across the EZ and is tackled in the EZ. 1stand 10 Team B @ the 3 B40 intercepts a pass on his own 4 yard line, His momentum is taking him into the EZ when he fumbles at the 1 and a) B40 recover his fumble in the EZ or b) teammate B45 recovers the ball in the EZ. SAFETY- the fumble put the ball into the EZ 3rdand 5 @ B20. B44 intercepts a pass in the EZ. While still in the EZ he fumbles the ball and it rolls forward into the field of play. In the scramble to recover the ball it bounces back into the end zone where a) B44 recovers while grounded or b) the ball bounces over the end line. Safety in both cases. The impetus for the ball going into the end zone the second time is B44 s fumble (the scramble and potential muff is not new impetus) No Momentum Exception because the ball did not remain in the EZ

  14. +Responsibility & Impetus Initial Impetus: The impetus imparted by a player who kicks, passes, snaps, or fumbles the ball shall be considered responsible for the ball s progress even though its course is deflected or reversed after striking a player, an official or the ground. Initial Impetus is expended - If someone kicks a ball not in his possession or bats a loose ball after it hits the ground. -If the ball comes to rest and someone imparts a new impetus (other than by forced touching)

  15. +Impetus?? Any kick by team A strikes the ground and team B player bats the ball across team B s goal line and Team B recovers it in the EZ. RULING: Safety. Batting the kick has destroyed the impetus imparted by the kick and is a new impetus. Note that merely touching, deflecting or being hit by the kick does not destroy the impetus of the kick. Team A s free kick is rolling at Team B s 3 yard line when B10 kicks the ball into the EZ and over the end line. Safety due to the new impetus. Foul by B player for illegal kick. If the penalty is accepted, the down is repeated after the enforcement.
