  1. Doctrines & Salvation Paris-East - Sermoniser Training May 2021

  2. Definition Nature Functions Correct attitude towards God s doctrines Outline

  3. Doctrine - Definition

  4. Biblical definition (part 1) Greek: Didaskalia Creed, Teaching, Principle or Dogma, or Doctrine Central meaning: rule and command Standard to be upheld and propagated It carries the authority and power of the One who issues it

  5. Biblical sense Doctrine is a body of essential truths (Rom 6:17) It guides the behaviour of the believer (Eph 4:20-21) Going against a doctrine: Lord s displeasure and even the judgement of the Lord (Acts 2:42; 5:4, 9) Negatively: imposing restraints on human behaviour (Gen 2:16-17) Positively: it moves man into the presence of His creator (Rom 5:1-2) Doctrine is God s prescription to those who believe in Jesus how to be saved (1 Pet 1:9) Biblical definition (part 2)

  6. Nature and Functions of the Doctrines

  7. What is the nature of doctrines Good doctrines - Proverbs 4:2 (NKJV) 2For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law. Good works modelled on good doctrines - Titus 2:7, 10 (NKJV) 7in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 10not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. Strange doctrines - Hebrews 13:9 (NKJV) 9Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.

  8. Why we need doctrines? Creation everything was good (Gen 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31) Fall corruption gripped humanity (2 Cor 11:3; Eph 2:1-3) Lost God s holiness: separate from God and life with God Lost true justice: no standard, no fairness Lost all of God s goodness: corruption in any goodness man conjures up Romans 3:23 (NKJV) 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  9. Why we need doctrines? Genesis 3:5 Man s sinful nature prefers to write their own rules and their own standard s Civilisation - Jude 1:14-15 (NKJV) Contrary and contradictions Lev 26:21, 23-24, 27-28, 40-41 Contrary to sound doctrine 1 Tim 1:9; Rom 16:17; 1 Timothy 6:3-6 Romans 7:12 (NKJV) 12Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

  10. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (1/6) Doctrines brings us back from darkness into the light, turning from evil to good, from under Satan to be completely under the safety of God s dominion for everlasting life (Acts 26:18) Doctrines brings us into harmony with God and His will (1 Tim 6:3; 1 Tim 3:15) Jesus doctrine is God s doctrine (Jn 7:16-17; 14:24; 17:14) i.e. God s will

  11. Gods doctrine Church s doctrine

  12. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (2/6) 1. The Father loves the Son (Jn 3:35-36; 5:20) The Son loves the Father (Jn 14:31; cf. Jn 10:17; 15:9) Through God s doctrine brought to us by Jesus, God is seeking to bring us into such a relationship (Jn 14:21, 23, 28, 31; 16:27; cf. Jn 14:24; 8:42) Therefore, this is what it means to love with faith (Eph 6:23) 2. 3. 4.

  13. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (3/6) 1. The Father loves the Son (Jn 3:35; 5:20; 10:17) - John 3:35 (NKJV) 35The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand. - John 5:20 (NKJV) 20For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. - John 10:17 (NKJV) 17 Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.

  14. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (4/6) 2. The Son loves the Father (Jn 14:31; cf. 15:10) - John 14:31 (NKJV) 31 But that the world may know that I (the Son) love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here. - John 15:10 (NKJV) 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father s commandments and abide in His love i.e. this is how the Son loves the Father.

  15. Father and Son relationship: harmonious and inseparable Loves Obedience

  16. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) 3. Through God s doctrine brought to us by Jesus, God is seeking to bring us into such a relationship (Jn 14:21, 23, 28, 31; 16:27; cf. Jn 14:24; 8:42)

  17. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 14:21 (NKJV) 21 He who has My commandments [i.e. God s doctrines] and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. (1) Keep the Lord s commandments = Love Jesus (2) He who loves Jesus will be loved by the Father

  18. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 14:23 (NKJV) 23Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word (i.e. God s doctrines); and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. (1) Those who keep the Lord s word The Father will love them (2) Those who keep the Lord s word The Holy Spirit will make His home with them - Home a staying, abiding, dwelling, abode (inseparable relationship)

  19. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 14:28 (NKJV) 28You have heard Me say to you, I am going away and coming back to you. If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, I am going to the Father, for My Father is greater than I. (1) Jesus was going away, i.e. He was going to die. (2) Jesus will return to those who loved Jesus, i.e. v23 keep His word

  20. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 14:31 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here. (NKJV) (1) Since God s doctrines contain God s will, that was the basis the world would know that He loved the Father (2) The relationship between the Son with the Father was that He would keep whatever commandment the Father gave him.

  21. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 16:27 (NKJV) 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. (1) Jesus reassures the disciples that when they loved Him, the Father Himself loved them. (2) If a person believes that Jesus came forth from God, then they will be willing for Jesus to bring them into the relationship that the Son has with the Father; an inseparable one through the doctrine.

  22. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 14:24 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father s who sent Me. (NKJV) (1) In order to come into a relationship with the Lord, a person needs to keep His word. (2) If a person does not keep His word, they do not keep the Father s word. Not keeping the Father s word is equal to rejecting the Father s word

  23. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (5/6) - John 8:42 42Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. (NKJV). (1) The spiritually natural tendency when people have the same God to be their Father, they would love Jesus. (2) Jesus knew whether these people He was facing on earth whether their father was indeed God through love for Him. The fact that they did not love Jesus meant that they had a different father. Especially when they wanted to kill Jesus and seek his harm makes it even more evident.

  24. True doctrines brings us back into a harmonious and forever inseparable relationship with God (6/6) 1. Jn 14:24; 8:42) Therefore, this is what it means to love with faith (Eph 6:23) 2. 3. 4.

  25. Functions of Doctrine

  26. Functions of Doctrine Introduction: Saves Nourishes Corrects

  27. Doctrine saves

  28. Why do I need doctrines? Process of salvation with doctrines Surrendering to God s doctrine Slave of God s righteousness In the state of surrendering Jesus sets free one sin after A life of self-examination Doctrine saves another

  29. Why do I need the doctrines for my salvation? Am I not saved already because I have been baptised and received the Holy Spirit? Acts 2:47 (NKJV) And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:42 (NKJV) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine

  30. Colossians 1:21-23 (NKJV) 1. Before baptism: alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works Process of Salvation with Doctrines 2. After baptism: reconciled [ beingsaved ] 3. Life after baptism whilst in Christ: if indeed you continue in the faith i.e. doctrines 4. Life of pursuit with the Lord: [The Lord is to] present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight 5. A life convicted in belief of the process and end- goal: grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard

  31. Romans 6:17-18 (NKJV) In surrendering to God s doctrine, we are set free from sin by obedience from the heart Romans 6:22 (NKJV) 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. Romans 1:16-17 (NKJV) 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Surrender to God s Doctrine to be Slave of God s Righteousness

  32. John 8:31-32 (NKJV) 31Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Jesus is the One who will set you free from sin To recognise that truth is in Jesus and to do nothing about it means that we are no different from the enemies of the Lord. Through the doctrines - Recognise as the right course of action. But a spiritual inner force holding us back Unbelief of the consequences/promises John 8:36 (NKJV) Trusting Jesus He will make you free from sin one after another (2 Cor 3:16-18; Rom 1:16-17) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

  33. A life of self- examination moves towards well within the boundary of the doctrine 1 Timothy 4:16 (NKJV) 16 Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. Deuteronomy 4:9 (NKJV) 9 Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.

  34. A life of self- examination moves towards well within the boundary of the doctrine Colossians 1:9-12 (NKJV) 9 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

  35. Why do I need doctrines? Process of salvation with doctrines Surrendering to God s doctrine Slave of God s righteousness In the state of surrendering Jesus sets free one sin after A life of self-examination Doctrine saves another

  36. Doctrine nourishes

  37. Matures and strengthens a believer to be a good soldier of Christ Deepens the understanding of God s will Discernment increases Rejects worldly chatter and words that corrupt Doctrine nourishes

  38. 1 Timothy 4:6 (NKJV) 6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. Matures and strengthens a believer to be a good soldier of Christ Nourish to educate form the mind (cf. Rom 12:1-2; Eph 4:23) From unbelief to belief (Rom 4:18-12; Heb 3:12, 19; Mt 13:6, 21; Isa 37:31-32) From carnal/worldly [considering of pride/lust] to spiritual [pleasing the Lord] (Rom 8:7; Heb 11:6) From childish to maturity (1 Cor 13:11; 14:20) From knowing to continuous rejecting unspiritual cravings so as to love the Father in doing all of the will of God (1 Jn 2:12- 14, 15-17)

  39. In the moment of weakness we need to be fed with the sound words of the gospel, God s doctrine (2 Timothy 2:7) Spiritual hunger for righteousness is satisfied when a person is observing and keeping God s commandments (cf. Job 36:5; 1 Cor 2:11-14; Psa 111:10; 119:34; Mt 5:6) Counting the cost: By faith, relying on the consolation of Christ, to forsake all things for the will of God so we gain Christ and His righteousness (Lk 14:27-28; 2 Cor 1:3-7; Php 3:7, 8-15) Matures and strengthens a believer to be a good soldier of Christ

  40. Mark 3:35 (NKJV) 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother. Hebrews 2:10-11 (NKJV) 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren Deepens the understanding of God s will

  41. Ephesians 6:5-8 (NKJV) 5 Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 6 not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, 7 with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV) 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Deepens the understanding of God s will

  42. Exodus 20:14 (NKJV) 14 You shall not commit adultery. 1 Corinthians 6:13 (NKJV) Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. Matthew 5:28 (NKJV) 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 1 Timothy 5:1 (NKJV) 1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as brothers, Deepens the understanding of God s will

  43. Mark 12:31 (NKJV) 31 And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Luke 6:32 (NKJV) 32 But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Romans 13:10 (NKJV) 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Deepens the understanding of God s will

  44. Luke 6:27-31 (NKJV) 27 But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. Deepens the understanding of God s will Luke 6:35-36 (NKJV) 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

  45. 1 Peter 1:22 (NKJV) 22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, John 13:34-35 (NKJV) 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. Deepens the understanding of God s will

  46. Philippians 1:9-11 (NKJV) 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge [doctrine] and all discernment [every kind of insight], 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Testing our sincerity towards God (2 Cor 6:6, sincere love ) Without offense: what wrong I am still doing, what right am I not yet doing? (Job 29:14; Psalm 4:5) Approve the things that are excellent: What can I do better? (Heb 11:4; 1 Cor 12:31-13:1-8). Discernment increases fruits of righteousness

  47. John 15:7-8 (NKJV) 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. John 14:13-14 (NKJV) 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. John 1:12 (NKJV) 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: Discernment increases fruits of righteousness

  48. 1 Timothy 4:6-8 (NKJV) 6 If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. 7 But rejectprofane and old wives fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come Rejects worldly chatter and words that corrupt

  49. 1 Timothy 6:3-5 (NKJV) 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. Rejects worldly chatter and words that corrupt Defending the truth is necessary (Jude 3-4)

  50. Rejects worldly chatter and words that corrupt Romans 16:17-18 (NKJV) 17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.
