To explore the meaning of each PESTLE factor. To be able to highlight and annotate PESTLE. Aims of the Session To be able to apply PESTLE in a specific context.
What skills will I be developing in this session? LO1 Be able to apply Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Literacy Digital Literacy LO3 Understand issues involved in a Global Citizenship Challenge Skills Development Assessment Focus
Starter Activity Think about What comes to mind when you see or hear the following words... It s a word thing... Political Social Environmental Political Social Environmental Make a list of key vocabulary associated with each of these words in your workbook.
What is PESTLE and why do we need it? PESTLE is an acronym which stands for: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental It is a framework that enables us to categorise factors that can affect a global issue. Understanding these categories gives us a bird s eye view of the global issue we are studying from many different angles. It is a tool to help us consider alternative opinions, views, and arguments in sources of information. Political Economic Environmental PESTLE Legal Social Technological
P Political Factors Useful words associated with Government: authority law ministry politics power rule state Union devolution These factors are associated with government and/or government policy, which could impact on a global issue. Think about... What is the political impact of the global issue? How is the government affected by the problem?
E Economic Factors Useful words associated with Economic: cash consumer cost credit currency debt recession finance inflation investment These factors are related to the economy which could impact on anything from education and health, to employment and taxes. Think about... What is the economic (financial/money) impact of the global issue? Who is affected financially?
S Social Factors Useful words associated with Social: population education poverty deprivation community culture diversity inequality These factors often relate to demographics such as race, age, and sex. It can also include someone's lifestyle, cultural trends, religion, or wealth. Think about... How does the global issue affect people? Are some people in society affected more than others?
T Technological Factors Useful words associated with technological: automation machinery computers mechanics artificial intellegence robotics telecommunications applied science These factors consider innovation and development in technology ranging from digital, to industry, or science. Think about... Are there any technological factors associated with the global issue? Are there any innovations in technology that may affect the issue?
T Legal Factors Useful words associated with legal/laws: Act forensic justified lawful legislation order summons warrant penalties These factors are associated with a government s rules and regulations; its laws. They can include civil rights, employment laws, consumer laws, or laws that regulate health and safety. Think about... Are there any legal issues considered? Is the law being broken?
E Environmental Factors Useful words associated with environmental: biodiversity climate change natural disasters ocean pollution population density deforestation recycling waste management ecological footprint These factors usually refer to the surrounding environment and ecological impact. These can include climate change, pollution, carbon footprints, or sustainability and natural resources. Think about... What is the impact of the global issue on the natural environment? How is it affected?
How to do a PESTLE analysis Before you start a PESTLE analysis, you need to apply skills you have already begun to develop... Step 3: Step 2: Step 1: Read the information Highlight key words Annotate the sources When highlighting facts and opinions, you also need to identify any relevant PESTLE factors in the sources of information. One effective technique is to create a colour code and key by selecting any 6 different colours - one for each factor. Once you have identified factors in the sources, you need to make sense of them. Use the prompt questions for each factor to determine how significant or important the factor is to understanding the global issue. Example PESTLE key How are they impacting the issue in the short and long-term? Are the implications positive or negative? Political Economic = green Social = red Technological = orange Legal Environmental = blue = pink = purple
You will need a copy of the Source Pack for this activity Activity One Complete the following activities in your workbook: Example PESTLE key (choose any 6 colours) Political Economic Social = red = green = purple Technological = orange Legal Environmental = blue = pink Create a PESTLE colour code and key Read through Sources 1-4 carefully. Highlight relevant PESTLE factors on each source (use the same colour throughout the pack). Add some annotation (notes) in the margin. Extension task: Research TWO additional sources on Voting at 16. For example, an image, infographic, news article, or video. Identify relevant PESTLE factors by highlighting and annotating the information.
Examples of identifying PESTLE factors in sources of information Example 1 Sixteen and 17-year-olds will be able to take part in the 2021 Welsh Assembly election under a new law passed on Wednesday. The legislation gives 70,000 teenagers the vote and also gives voting rights... A total of 41 assembly members voted for the bill, just exceeding the two-thirds majority of 40 votes needed. What is the political impact of the global issue? How is the government affected by the problem? Political There are many political factors linked to this issue. For example, 16 and 17 year olds have been given the right to vote in the 2021 Welsh Assembly elections as a result of 41 members voting in favour of the bill. This suggests that the majority of Senedd Members support the Vote 16 changes to empower young people to participate in the democratic process. Extract taken from https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-50561883 Political Economic Social = red = green = purple Technological = orange Legal Environmental = blue PESTLE Key: = pink Example 2 There is a need to reduce the political alienation of young people who are likely to be as aware of issues at 16 as they would be at 18 and might feel that their views do not matter if they cannot vote. A wide range of political decisions affect them such as tax rates, job seekers allowance, university fees, bullying and public transport. Politicians would be more likely to act on these if young people could vote. What is the economic (financial/money) impact of the global issue? Who is affected financially? Economic One significant economic factor in the source is that young people have the right to participate in decisions about things that affect them directly. For example, tax rates, job seekers allowance, as well as the cost of studying at university. According to the source, there need to be less political alienation as these are some of the important economic factors that impact on them personally. Activity Two Complete the following activities in your workbook: What is the political impact of the global issue? How is the government affected by the problem? Political For each source, complete an analysis of the PESTLE factors you identified. Use the prompt questions to help you. What is the economic (financial/money) impact of the global issue? Who is affected financially? Economic Which PESTLE factors do you think relate more specifically with this global issue? Support your views with examples from the sources. How does the global issue affect people? Are some people in society affected more than others? Social Extension task: Complete a PESTLE analysis for your additional sources from activity one on Voting at 16. Label these as Source 5 and Source 6.
Plenary Activity Complete the following activity in your workbook: Select one of the following Index Cards to review your learning from this session. You can either bullet point your response or write it in a paragraph. Index Cards - What do I know now? A. C. B. 3 = Explain three PESTLE factors Draw a concept map, How has identifying __________________________ or mind-map to __________________________________ identified in the source pack. ______________________________ relevant PESTLE factors __________________________ illustrate what you have __________________________________ 2 = Give two examples to ______________________________ helped you think more __________________________ learned about PESTLE. __________________________________ support this. ______________________________ critically about the global __________________________ __________________________________ 1 = Write one question you have ______________________________ issue you are studying? __________________________ __________________________________ about the global issue. ______________________________
