Understanding Ignorance and Innocence from the Old and New Testaments
The concept of ignorance and innocence is explored through the teachings of the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, ignorance was considered sinful and required sacrifices, while in the New Testament, the emphasis shifted towards knowledge and truth through Jesus Christ. Passages from both parts of the Bible highlight the importance of understanding and overcoming ignorance.

Ignorance Or Innocence What Does The Old Testament Teach About Ignorance? Under the Old Law ignorance of God s commandments were sinful and required sacrifice (Lev 4:2-5; Num 5:22-25) (Heb 5:1-5) Under the former dispensations even the Gentiles were culpable to God s law (Gen 20:8-10) Sodom & Gomorrah (Gen 18-19) The nations were judged by God (Egypt, Nineveh, Assyria, Babylon, etc) as stated through the prophets (Rom 1-3)
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning
Ignorance Or Innocence What Does The New Testament Teach About Ignorance? The New Covenant would be one of knowledge (Jer 31:31; Heb 8:10-12, 16-17) Truth would come through Jesus Christ (Jn 1:17-18 Cf Jn 16:13) For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. (John 1:17 18 KJV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (John 16:13 KJV) Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: (2 Pet 1:2 3 KJV)
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; (1 Cor 10:1 KJV) But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (1 Th 4:13
Ignorance Or Innocence What Does The New Testament Teach About Ignorance? Paul s ignorance was due to his unbelief (1 Tim 1:12-15) And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. (1 Tim 1:12 15 KJV) not as in rebellion
And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. (Acts 24:16 KJV)
Ignorance Or Innocence What about willful ignorance? Israel (Rom 10:1-3) The Gentiles (Eph 4:17-18) So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; (Eph 4:17 18 NAS95)
Ignorance Or Innocence Application This subject has it s greatest advocacy when it comes the subject of marriage (Matt 5:31-32; 19:1-5; Mk 10:1-12; Lk 16:18) (Matt 19:1-5) Male & Female (vs 4 Cf Gen 1:27; 5:2) Joined {bound} by God (vs 5 Cf Gen 2:24) One flesh (Gen 2:24 Cf 1 Cor 16:15-20)
Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make (1 Cor 6:15 20 KJV)
Ignorance Or Innocence Homosexual Marriage Adulterous Marriage Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. (Matt 19:6 8 KJV) It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. (Matt 5:31 32 KJV) And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (Matt 19:4 5 KJV) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them (Gen 1:27 KJV) Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Gen 2:24 KJV) y unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. (Matt 19:9 KJV)
For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in allholy conversation and godliness, (2 Pet 3:5 11 KJV)
Marriage ishonorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge. (Heb 13:4 NKJV) And He said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Rev 21:6 8 NKJV)
