BY David Heyman The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
PLOT The film is about a child named Bruno, son of a German officer and during the Second World War due to a promotion by his father the family is forced to move from Berlin to live in a country house, Bruno was alone without friends and then decides to leave the house to explore the surroundings and discovers that around the house there was a concentration camp and despite the hatred that the Germans had towards Jews, Bruno makes friends with a Jewish boy named Shmuel, as the two boys make friends but start seeing each other separated by a barbed wire until Bruno decides to dig a grave and enter the concentration camp and is then killed by the Germans.
CHARACTERS Bruno Hess: he is the child who plays the role of protagonist in the story, unaware of the war and of the work of his father, he makes friends with Shmuel and Pavel. He believes the concentration camp is a farm and admires his father for thinking that. He will help Shmuel find his father eventually, but mistaken for a Jewish child, he will die in the gas chamber. Shmuel: he is the deuteragonist. Bruno's only friend in Auschwitz. He performs a fundamental function, he represents the friendship between a Catholic German and a Jew, without racism. Thanks to him Bruno does not want to leave his new home there and is fine. Eventually, while looking for his father, he will die with his friend, Bruno, in the gas chamber. Ralf Hess: he is the father of Bruno and Gretel, who was promoted by his boss for quickly building the Auschwitz concentration camp. He keeps the secret of dead Jews and World War II from his wife and children and does not mind threatening his mother, who opposes his work. His son dies because of him and it is not known whether he will lay down his uniform later. He will be hanged in Auschwitz by the Americans.
... The F hrer: he is the antagonist of the novel and the Nazi leader. He really existed, and he also plays the role of dictator of Germany. He has negative ideas about Jews, considered an inferior race, and will commit suicide during the Battle of Berlin. Elsa Hess: she is Bruno's mother. She does not share her husband's ideas and is sweeter with the Jews. She seems to be better with Bruno than with her sister. Gretel Hess: she is Bruno's sister, she has a weak character. She is spoiled, selfish and arrogant, taking advantage of her comfortable living conditions and being the older sister. Eventually, she will suffer the death of her father and brother. Kurt Kotler: he is a young officer and he is diabolical and ruthless. He brutally and bloody beats all Jews who disobey, even children like Shmuel. He kills numerous people, such as Shmuel's father. He dies in the battle of Berlin.
DARKNESS Firstly I believe that the worst part is how Jews are ripped from their families without knowing where they are going or with whom, and even thought this scene is not in the film it really makes you think about it. A moment of darkness that struck me is the misinformation of non-Jewish people like Bruno s mother and Bruno. SPOILER ALERT !!! I presume that the darkest part is when Bruno s family look for him everywhere without knowing that in that moment he is dying in one of the most dangerous machine for Jews the gas chambers which he thought it was a normal shower like every other Jews.
LIGHT The elements of light in the film are various, as already seen the environment of the time is an environment devoid of humanity, full of injustices and crimes against the human being In the general context, therefore, bruno's actions are a ray of humanity and warmth in the darkness of the lagher, normal relationships and actions between children of that age, which however for Shumer appear as extraordinary. It therefore demonstrates the impossibility of an innocent child to understand the madness that was happening and understand that he was on the side of the bad guys even if he had no apparents faults
WHY DID WE CHOOSE THIS FILM? We chose this film because it has a very delicate story that struck us a lot. It also talks about a very strong friendship between two kids who are too young to realize what is really happening in their lives. The difference between this movie and the others is that this story ends very badly, compared to the others that have a happy ending.
Bruno: Why do you wear pajamas all day? Shmuel: The soldiers. They took all our clothes away. Bruno: My dad's a soldier, but not the sort that takes people's clothes away. Bruno: He used to be a doctor once, but gave it all up to peel potatoes. SOLDIER; THEY SMELL WORSE WHEN THEY BURN, DONT THEY Their lost voices must continue to be heard. JEWISH MAN: ITS JUST A SHOWER Bruno's Father: I'm a solider. Soldiers fight a war. Elsa Bruno's Mother: That's not war! Bruno's Father: It's a vital part of it! BRUNO: IT COULD BE WORSE THA IT LOOKS Bruno: We're not supposed to be friends, you and me.
