  3. WHAT IS AHATE CRIME? Hatecrime isabuse directed against people with protectedcharacteristics such as,race,gender, religion,disability & sexual orientation. Hate crime isa form of social prejudice. Hate crimes include,physical attacks, written orverbalinsults, vandalism, graffiti and threatening behaviours.

  4. Physical Attacks What is aphysical attack? - A physical attack(sometimes known as assault) iswhensomeone attacks you or threatens to attack you. How many are reported in theUK? Nearly 2% of all adults in theUK have been a victimof physical attackswhich is aboutto 1.5 million people. What is the punishment for a physical attack? - There are three kindsof physicalattack. Common assault carries a setenceof 6 months.ThereisthenABH(Actual Bodily Harm) which has a sentence of 5 years.The final one isGBH(Grievously Bodily Harm)which carriesa sentenceof 5 yearsor 7 years if racially or religiouslymotivated. -

  5. Written orVerbalInsults What is a written insult? A written insult is something that is communicated by text that insults or upsets another person. Examples ofwritten insults can be found inemails, social media, letters, newspapers or magazines. What is a verbal insult? When someone says something, you find insulting or upsetting. It could include, swearing, false accusations and provoking language. What is the punishment for written or verbal insults? There is a defamation law for liable and slander. Normally people would get a fine for that. For Verbal insults it is a offence in England and Wales to cause harassment via verbal and written insults and could result in a fine.

  6. Vandalism What is vandalism? Vandalism is the act ofdeliberate damage to private or public property. What is the punishment for vandalism? The punishment for vandalism is that you have to cover the cost of damages and repairs. If the damage is more than 5,000, you could face a 6 month prison sentence. Different types of vandalism?   7. Graffiti What is graffiti? Graffitiis words or pictures that are sprayed on a wall in an illicit way. Why is graffiti a crime? Graffiti is a form of vandalism, and it negatively impacts by making public areas seem unsafe Different types of graffiti? Letters Pictures 3D Stencils What is the punishment for graffiti related crimes? The punishment for committing graffiti related crimes is community service and a fine.

  8. WHAT ISA MATECRIME? Mate crime is when you take advantage of someone you know and exploit them whilst pretending to be their friend. Examples of mate crime are, financial abuse, cuckooi ng, harassment, theft and physical abuse.

  9. Financial Abuse What is financial abuse? Financial abuse includes, theft either physically, or through transfer of funds from the vulnerable person. misappropriation or misuse of money or property. Who is targeted? - Individuals who lack the mental capacity requiredto manage their own finance. - People who are reliant on others for care/support and/or isolated and live alone. What is the punishment? The punishment for financial abuse is upto 12 months in prison for a summary judgement and then 5 to 10 years if found guilty of the charges.

  10. Cuckooing What is cuckooing? Cuckooing iswhen an individual or group to facilitateexploitationofthe tenantand their property.Enabling them to carry out criminal acts such as drug dealing, sex work orweapon storing. How common is cuckooing in the UK? Cuckooing is sadly a common problem in the UK. Between2018 and 2024 we have seen a big rise in Cuckooing in the UK. Who is targeted? People with learning disabilities, mental health issues, physical disabilities.Single mothers, substance abusers, and the elderly can also be targeted. What is the punishment? The punishment forcuckooingvaries from an unlimited fine up to life imprisonment. - - - -

  11. Harassment What is harassment? Harassment is when an individual or group repeatedly acts in a manner that can make another individual or group feel scared, distressed or threatened. It can include, aggressive, pressuring, persisting or intimidatingbehaviour directedat an individual or group of people. It can be done in many different ways such as verbal, written and digitally. Who is targeted? Anyone can be targeted as a victim of harassment and it can be linked to stalking. What is the punishment for harassment? The maximum sentence for harassment is a 10 year prison sentence and a fine. - - - - -

  12. Theft What is theft? Theft is the act of stealing from an individual, group of people or a company. What are the different types of theft? - Larceny - Robbery/Burglary - Wage Theft - Petty Theft What is the punishment for theft? The punishment for theft can depend on how serious the theft is. This can range from a fine upto a custodial sentence.

Why is mate/hate crime different to other crime? - Mate crimescan be hard to identifybecausetheoffender is deemed to be a friend, family memberorsomeone who uses the relationship for personal gain or exploitation of an individual. - Hatecrime is different to other crimes becauseit isbased around showing prejudicetowards characteristic s of an individual.It can betargetedas race, genderor other characteristics.
