How do I know if my child needs additional educational services beyond the regular classroom?
Bright Child or Gifted Learner? Bright Child Knows the answers 6-8 repetitions for mastery Completes assignments Enjoys school Absorbs information Works hard Top group Learns with ease Gifted Learner Asks the questions 1-2 repetitions for mastery Initiates projects Enjoys learning Manipulates information Plays around, yet tests well Beyond the group Already knows
How are Horizons Students Identified? There are 4 steps in the process. 1) Referral (Teacher/Parent/Self)) 2) G.E.T. Committee Meeting 3) Evaluation 4) Eligibility determined 5) Learn more
Who May Refer My Child For Testing? Referrals for evaluation may come from any individual with knowledge of the student's abilities. Generally, teachers or counselors make Horizons referrals. However, if a parent would like their child to be considered for further evaluation by the Gifted Evaluation Team, they may request a Parent Referral Packet by contacting their child's homeroom teacher in writing/email. Please note that teachers are expected to challenge every student according to his/her abilities. Therefore, a desire to have a child participate in the Horizons Program is not a reason for a gifted referral. The Gifted Evaluation Team (GET) will review all referrals and evidence that supports the referral. The team will decide if further testing is warranted. Parent and Teacher referrals will be reviewed prior to each testing window.

All referrals 1st-5th All referrals 1st-5th All referrals K-5th Referral Deadline Sept. 5th Nov. 14th Feb. 13th Testing Window Sept. 8th-Oct. 10th Dec. 1st-17th Feb. 23rd-March 27th Transfer students from out of state must have official documentation of former gifted program eligibility before they will be automatically referred to the Gifted Eligibility Team.
Gifted Eligibility Criteria Achievement Mental Ability 96thpercentile or above on a standardized test of mental ability, composite or full scale score 90th percentile or above on a standardized achievement test (Total Reading, Total Math or Total Battery) Creativity Motivation 90th percentile or above on a total battery of a standardized test of creativity 90th percentile or above on a standardized rating score
Testing Testing and scoring may take as long as twelve weeks. Be patient! If after testing a child does not qualify for services, he/she must wait two years before retesting.
