What is a Conflict of Interest? Conflict of Interest o a conflict between the private interests and the official responsibilities of a person in a position of trust. [Merriam-Webster Dictionary] Shared Interest o A confluence between the interests of two or more people, groups, or organizations.
Examples: Conflict of Interest v Shared Interest Conflict of Interest: o Business example o Judge Smith is set to preside over a case in which the defendant was a former client. Shared interest: o Main street businesses and local tourism bureau both support construction of historic landmarks and signs on Main street to attract more visitors.
Conflict of Interest in state law MI Constitution Art IV 10. Legislators and state officers, government contracts, conflicts of interest. o The interest must be material, as opposed to trivial, and the interest must involve a pecuniary or beneficial interest. Ethics and Integrity: ICRC Code of Conduct Commissioners shall demonstrate honesty, integrity, and professionalism in their duties. (A) Commissioners shall conduct themselves in a manner which reflects positively on the Commission and shall put the responsibilities and integrity of the Commission above personal or political gain. (B) Commissioners shall refuse to engage in or sanction activities for personal gain at the expense of the Commission or in violation of government code. (G) Commissioners shall maintain transparency in process and procedure so to instill public confidence in the Commission and the redistricting process. (H)
