The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant funds programs in allied health certification and job placement. The New Jersey Health Professionals Pathways to Regional Excellence Project (NJ-PREP) involves a consortium of twelve community colleges in New Jersey since October 2014. Executive Summary Overview The Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College Career Training (TAACCCT) Grant funds programs which provide training for allied health certification as well as job placement. Under this grant, the New Jersey Health Professionals Pathways to Regional Excellence Project (NJ-PREP) includes a consortium of twelve (12) community colleges across New Jersey, which was formed in October 2014. 3

Executive Summary TAACCCT Programs and Administration Certification Programs: Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) EKG Technician (CET) Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Medical Billing and Coding Patient Care Technician Administration: Martha Redondo, TAACCCT Grant Project Manager, March 2015, oversees the grant s budget and operation. Andrea Bash, Recruiter, February 2016, markets the courses offered through TAACCCT as well as recruits students to enroll Sara Smilowitz, Job Placement Counselor, September 2016, assists students with resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and job placement. 4

  5. Executive Summary - Mercer Metrics Enrollment 414 students with a 75% program completionrate Age/Population Average student age is 37 years old. Women make up 84.9% of the TAACCCT student population Black/African American and Caucasian students each make up 32.3% of the population Residence 30.7% of the student body resides in Trenton 11.9% in Hamilton 8% in Lawrenceville 5% each in East Windsor, Ewing, Plainsboro, and Princeton 5

  6. Classroom Labs Through the TAACCCT grant, Mercer was able to furnish two classroom labs for the Allied Health programs at the James Kerney (Trenton) campus. This streamlined hands-on learning and enabled students to thrive in the classroom. 6

  9. Amazon Warehouse In Summer 2016, Mercer piloted an onsite EKG at the Amazon Warehouse as a part of Amazon s Career Choice program. The first course ran from July 23 to August 13, 2016 and the second from September 10 to October 2, 2016. The programs were so successful that Mercer was asked to broaden the onsite offerings to Amazon employees. 29 students enrolled in two cohorts Cohort 1 17 enrolled 15 completed 9 attempted certification; 4 certificates earned Cohort 2 12 enrolled 12 completed 6 attempted certification; 6 certificates earned 93% of students enrolled in on-site Amazon EKG courses completed the course 55% of students who completed the program took the certification exam; of those students, 73% passed and gained their certification The remaining students have either been unresponsive to attempts to follow up on their retesting status or have not attempted to retest 9

  11. Smart Start Smart Start is a program funded through the TAACCCT grant which offers an introductory class free to students. The course brushes up on reading, writing, and math, introduces medical terminology, and offers CPR and First-Aid certification. 83 students enrolled in the six classes run since February 1, 2016 25 58 students completed the class students dropped 24 students enrolled in other Allied Health programs 11

Key Learnings and Next Steps Next Steps Awaiting contracts for externships: Capital Health, Reproductive Medicine Associates Seeking instructors for all courses Partner with Nursing Department to develop a list of nursing students who are eligible to sit for NJ CNA exam and who are interested in taking CHHA course through Continuing Studies Key Learnings Leverage similar programs on credit side to supplement missing credentials to accomplish Associates Degree in Health Sciences Partner with the One Stop to fund classes that meet the job needs of the community Nursing students are qualified to sit for NJ CNA license exam after completing Nursing I and may be available to take CHHA course with Continuing Studies after obtaining CNA 18
