THE WHY OF THE CROSS ? 1 Corinthians 1:17-18
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Jesus died because of Sin What is Sin? (1 Jn 3:4; 5:17) What is the consequence of Sin? Death is the ultimate consequence of sin (Rom 6:23) Physical death (Jas 2:26; Eccl 12:7) Spiritual death. Spiritual death is the ultimate tragedy! (Isa 59:1-2 Cf Gen 3:15,22-24) (Prov 15:29)..
The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous. (Proverbs 15:29 KJV)
THE WHY OF THE CROSS It is because of sin the men die physically and spiritually! All men sin (Rom 3:23 Cf 3:9- 18) Therefore all men will die (Rom 5:12-14) Because of sin we become & remain the enemies of God!
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:3 4 KJV) [Greek Strong s] 2189. echthra, ekh -thrah; feminine of 2190; hostility; by implication, a reason for opposition: enmity, hatred.
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Jesus Died To Remove Sin All will die physically (Rom 5:12; *Heb 9:27) All are dead spiritually (2 Cor 5:14-15) Which death does the cross of Christ remove? (Rev 20:12-15)
And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:12 15 KJV)
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Jesus Died To Remove Sin Though we die physically we can live spiritually (Jn 11:25 Cf 5:21-24 Cf *10:27- 28)
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Jesus Died Because Of God s Nature & Justice (Heb 9:22) [ purged KJV/purified NKJV/cleansed NASB] Cf (Gen 3:21) Cf (Gen 1:29-30 Cf 9:3) The blood of animals could not ultimately atone for sin (Heb 9:7-14 Cf 10:1-2,19-22 Cf *Eph 5:2)
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Jesus Died Because Of God s Nature & Justice Through the blood of Christ we have reconciliation through remission of sin (Heb 2:14-17; Rom 5:9-11 Cf Col 1:12-*20-23)
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. (Hebrews 2:14 17 KJV)
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. NKJV) (Romans 5:9 11
And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciledIn the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; KJV) (Colossians 1:20 23
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Why The Cross? (Phil 2:5-8) Represented the sinfulness of sin. Most agonizing form of death (includes torture, excruciating pain, and reproach/shame). Romans perfected it as a means of death/execution. It represented the curse of sin (Gal 3:10-13 Cf Deut 21:22- 23) *(2 Cor 5:21)
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV)
THE WHY OF THE CROSS Why The Cross? To be the head of the Church (Eph 1:22-23) And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.(Ephesians 1:22 23 KJV) To unite all men in that Church (Eph 2:11-17 Cf Col 3:15)
