The Temptation of Jesus and Spiritual Warfare

   as told by Luke

Luke 4:1-15

Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the
Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus
ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell
this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do
not live by bread alone.’”

Luke 4:1-15

Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the
kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give
you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over
them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to
anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship
me.”
Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the
Lord
your God and serve only him.’”

Luke 4:1-15

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point
of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump
off! For the Scriptures say,
‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you. And
they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even
hurt your foot on a stone.’ ”
Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not
test the
Lord
 your God.’”

Luke 4:1-15

When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him
until the next opportunity came.
Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s
power. Reports about him spread quickly through the
whole region. He taught regularly in their synagogues and
was praised by everyone.

We live in a war zone

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty
power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able
to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are
not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against
evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against
mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits
in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6

We battle internally

And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my
sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want
to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is
wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to
do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in
me that does it.

We battle internally

I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want
to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love
God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power
within me that is at war with my mind. Romans 7:18-25

We battle internally

It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I
decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. I truly
delight in God’s commands, but it’s pretty obvious that
not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly
rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge.

Deuteronomy 8:3. Yes he humbled you by letting you go
hungry and feeding you with manna. He did it to teach you the
people need more than bread for their life. Real life comes from
feeding on every word of the Lord.
