Jesus said to him, “Unless you see miraculous signs and
wonders, you won’t believe.” –
John 4
Samaritan woman is not prominent Individual
The Samaritan woman asked, “Why do you, a Jewish man, ask
for something to drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (Jews
and Samaritans didn’t associate with each other.)

Jesus responded, “If you recognized God’s gift and who is
saying to you, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ you would be
asking him and he would give you living water.”
The woman said to him, “Sir, you don’t have a bucket and the
well is deep. Where would you get this living water?

You aren’t
greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave this well to us,
and he drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty
again, but whoever drinks from the water that I will give will
never be thirsty again. The water that I give will become in
those who drink it a spring of water that bubbles up into
eternal life.”
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will
never be thirsty and will never need to come here to draw
water!”
- John 4:7-15

“You are right to say, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus

Slide Note

About 2 years ago we went through the whole book of John as a fellowship

John is beautifully written and presents Jesus in a very different way than Matt, Mark & Luke

Has fewer narrative stories than the synoptic

A lot more dialogues and monologues with and by Jesus

Highly symbolic language and dualism:

Light/darkness

Life/Death

Freedom/slavery

Spirit/Flesh

There are also a lot of ‘Multiple meanings’ of things Jesus says which leads to misunderstanding. It’s unclear if the misunderstanding is intentional or just consequential

John chapter 4 captures the familiar story of the “Samaritan Woman” or the “Woman at the Well” where we have one of the popular multiple meanings statements.

Where Jesus has a solo encounter with a woman while he’s in transit A lot of focus on the story starts from who she is… A Samaritan… a woman…. Unmarried… This is the longest recorded conversation of Jesus we have in the New Testament.

Traditionally a lot of time has been spent on who the woman was, who the Samaritans are and some of the why’s and wherefore of the scene. But today I want to spend more time on what it is they were talking about.

As the conversation proceeds, it seems like they each up the ante and take the conversation deeper and deeper and speaks to a long standing theological dialogue/disagreement between Jews and Samaritans.
