The Miraculous Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem
Once upon a time, 2000 years ago, there lived a young woman
called Mary. Mary was engaged to marry a carpenter called
Joseph and together they lived in a small house in a town called
Nazareth.
One day, God sent the angel Gabriel to visit Mary and give her a
very special message. The angel Gabriel told Mary that she was
going to have a baby! The baby would be God’s son and she must
call him Jesus.
As Mary’s tummy grew bigger and bigger,
she and Joseph got married. They were very
excited for the birth of God’s son, Jesus.
Far away, the ruler of the land,
Emperor*
Augustus, decided that he wanted to have a
list of all the people that lived in each town.
The list was called a
census*
- a little bit
like your class register! Emperor Augustus
told everyone that they needed to go back
to the town where they were born, to add
their name to the list.
*emperor = a leader of many different countries
*census = a list of people who live in a town or city
Joseph came from a town far away
called Bethlehem. He and Mary had
to travel a long distance to get
there.
Mary’s tummy was big and Jesus
would be born very soon. She was
tired and she couldn’t walk far, so
Joseph found a donkey for her to
ride upon. They travelled over the
hills of Galilee for several days
before they reached the town of
Bethlehem.
When they arrived in
Bethlehem, on the 25th
December, Mary and Joseph
tried to find a place to stay.
Mary was tired and she
needed to rest.
Bethlehem was very busy with
all the people that had
travelled home to add their
list to the census. All the
inns*
and places to stay were full.
They knocked on door after
door, but the answer was
always the same:
“There’s no room at the inn.”
* inn = a house used like a small hotel
Eventually a kind innkeeper took pity on them. He told them that while
his inn was full, he did have a stable where he kept his animals, and
Mary and Joseph were welcome to stay there if they wished.
That night, in the stable, Mary gave birth to her baby boy. God’s son -
the baby Jesus. She wrapped and
swaddled*
Him tightly in strips of
cloth and laid Him down to rest in a
manger*
filled with hay. .
*swaddled
= wrapped

or cloth
*manger =
a trough
that holds
animals’
food
On a hillside not too far away,
some shepherds were watching
their sheep. Suddenly, they saw a
bright light appear in the sky.
They felt very scared.
An angel appeared from the light
and told them not to be afraid.
The angel told them some good
news - the son of God had been
born! They could find Him in
Bethlehem, lying in a manger.
The shepherds wanted to visit the new baby straight away.
They set off for Bethlehem to find the stable and the baby
Jesus.
When they arrived, they knelt on the ground and smiled at
Jesus. They felt so happy and they knew that a new King had
been born. The shepherds told Mary and Joseph about the
angel appearing in the sky and said that the angel told them
Jesus was going to save the world.
At the same time, far, far away in the East, Three Wise Men
were looking out at the starry sky. They were surprised and
excited to notice a new star in the sky, shining brightly. They
knew that a new star meant that a
new ruler*
had been born.
The Wise Men set off on camels to follow the star and find the
great new king. They travelled to the palace as they thought that
would be the place they would find a new king.
*ruler = a leader, much like a king or queen
When they arrived at the palace, they
told King Herod that they had come to
see the new baby. King Herod was
surprised and angry. He didn’t know
that a special new baby had been born
and he didn’t want anyone else to be
the king!
He told the Wise Men to go and find
the baby and bring Him back to the
palace. King Herod planned to send the
baby far away - he wanted to make
sure no one could be the king but him!
The Wise Men set off again and on the 6th January, they found
Mary, Joseph and Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem. It had taken
them 13 days to reach the stable!
They knelt down and gave Jesus the gifts they had brought for
him: Gold,
Frankincense*
and
Myrrh*.
*frankincense = a nice smelling oil, used in perfumes, to run onto
skin or even in a cup of tea!
*myrrh = dried sap from a thorny tree, used as a perfume or a
medicine.

That night as the Wise Men slept, an
angel visited them in their dreams. The
angel told them that King Herod was
planning on making sure Jesus could
never be the king. He was not going to
be kind to baby Jesus.
The Wise Men woke up and quickly
warned Mary and Joseph. The Kings
went straight home and didn’t return to
the palace as King Herod had asked.
Joseph decided to take Mary and Jesus
to Egypt where they would be safe and
far away from the horrible King Herod.
Egypt was where Mary, Joseph and Jesus stayed until King
Herod died. They eventually returned to live in Nazareth,
where Jesus would grow up to become the saviour of the world.
Mary, a young woman engaged to Joseph, bore a child named Jesus, the Son of God, after an angelic visitation. Despite facing challenges during their journey to Bethlehem for a census, they found refuge in a stable where Jesus was born. Shepherds were guided by angels to witness this divine event, emphasizing the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth.
