Thesis Statement Pel is considered one of the best soccer players on and off the pitch through his impressive career achievements, personal life triumphs, involvement in organizations and charities, and his continued efforts to improve Brazil.
Early Life Pele was born on October 23, 1940 in Tres Coracoes Brazil Name given at birth: Edson Arantes do Nascimento Named after Thomas Edison The son of a minor league soccer player, Joao Ramos known as Dondinho Grew up in poverty His father coached him during his youth
Early Days on the Pitch His father and him worked day after day together, coaching Pele his techniques. He joined his first soccer team when he was 11 in the town of Bauru, Brazil He was on a youth squad that was coached by Waldemar de Brito, a former member of the Brazilian national soccer team Got rejected from first major league team he tried out for The first professional team he joined were the Santos at age 15

Pels Career Continued... Pele won 3 FIFA World Cups; 1958, 1962, 1970 He announced his retirement in 1974 but than agreed to continue to play soccer and joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League He then retired after leading the Cosmos to the League championship in 1977 After retirement, he earned several awards: 1978, he was awarded the International Peace award 1980, he was named athlete of the century 1999, named FIFA s Co- Player of the Century Soccer is more than just a game, but a past time Soccer has effects on Brazilian culture, drawing all Brazilians together during the World Cup
