The Impact of Social Media on Teenagers' Mental Health

Opposing

Viewpoints
While writing an argumentative paper it is
important to remember that there is another
side to the issue. You definitely need to pick
one side and support it, but you cannot ignore
the other side of the issue completely.
Acknowledging the opposing viewpoint gives
your paper validity and can strengthen your
case if you can give support against the
opposing viewpoint.
What does the rubric say?
Advanced Content-
Clearly addresses the opposing viewpoint.
What this looks like:
Gives one reason that people who disagree with your claim might
say to prove you are wrong.
Uses solid reasons to prove why people who disagree with your
claim are wrong about that reason and how you are actually correct
in your claim.
Proficient Content-
Acknowledges the opposing viewpoint.
What this looks like:
Gives one reason that people who disagree with your claim might
say to prove you are wrong.
Let’s break down an example…

…Giving trophies to everyone sends the
wrong message (
reason). In life no one is getting
rewarded for just showing up or doing what is
required (
support for the reason).
Although
trophies can encourage kids to keep playing
(
acknowledges an opposing view point
),
it is not
an effective way to motivate players.
(
provides a
reason as a counter-argument
). The trophies lose
their meaning when everyone gets one.
(
concluding sentence restates the claim)
Analyze this…

Trophies should be rewarded only to the best
players. When everyone receives a trophy the
meaning of the trophy is gone. Although some
argue that trophies encourage kids of all abilities to
play sports, Karen Coffin, a coach who writes about
youth sports, and Dr. Michelle Anthony, an author
and psychologist who works with kids and schools,
agree that trophies are not the best way to
motivate players (Coffin and Anthony). Instead of
giving meaningless trophies, let’s reward only the
best players.
Strong Student Example
Becoming bullied and/or threatened can cause teenagers mental health to
break down. Social media causes lower self –esteem, higher anxiety,
depression, and poor sleep quantity, says Dr. Heather Cleland Woods (Woods).
This means that parents should think about teens use on social media, in
relation to switching it off. As Lindsay Ferrier points out in “Teens Do Not Have
a Right to Privacy from Parents”, many parents are surprised to hear that their
teens mental health has broken down, causing them to harm themselves
(Ferrier). Together Dr. Heather Cleland Woods and Lindsay Ferrier think that
social media is bad and will cause a break in metal health. Laura Santhanam
disagrees. She says that “Teens care a lot about what they share and how they
share it, and they think about it quite a bit” (Santhanam). In other words, she
believes that what teens choose to post is important to their identity and the
result of time and consideration. Though this can sometimes be true, most
teens are irresponsible and post things like phone numbers, addresses, and
even bad pictures of themselves, which can cause bullying, and can lead to
damaging their mental health. Checking on adolescents' social media is
important to do because it will prevent any damage and /or break down in
teen’s mental health.

Social media has a significant impact on teenagers' mental health, with Dr. Heather Cleland Woods and Lindsay Ferrier highlighting the negative effects of platforms on self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. While Laura Santhanam emphasizes the importance of thoughtful sharing, irresponsible behavior can lead to bullying and harm. Parents need to be aware of the risks to protect their teens' mental well-being.
