David’s Devotion
to the Temple

1 Chronicles 29:1-9

16
Do you not know that
you are
God’s temple
 and that God’s
Spirit dwells in you?
17
If anyone
destroys God’s temple, God will
destroy him. For God’s temple is
holy, and
you are that temple
.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (ESV)

19
So then you are no
longer strangers and aliens, but
you are fellow citizens with the
saints and members of the
household of God,
20
built on the
foundation of the apostles and
prophets, Christ Jesus himself
being the cornerstone,

Ephesians 2:19-22 (ESV)

21
in whom the whole
structure, being joined
together,
grows into a holy
temple in the Lord
22
In
him you also are being built
together into a dwelling place
for God by the Spirit.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (ESV)

29
And David the king said to all the
assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone
God has chosen, is young and
inexperienced, and the work is great,
for the palace will not be for man but for
the Lord God.

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

So I have provided for the house of my
God, so far as I was able, the gold for the
things of gold, the silver for the things of
silver, and the bronze for the things of
bronze, the iron for the things of iron,
and wood for the things of wood, besides
great quantities of onyx and stones for
setting, antimony, colored stones, all sorts
of precious stones and marble.

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

Moreover, in addition to all that I have
provided for the holy house, I have a
treasure of my own of gold and silver,
and because of my devotion to the house
of my God I give it to the house of my
God:
3,000 talents of gold, of the gold
of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of refined
silver, for overlaying the walls of the
house,

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

and for all the work to be done by
craftsmen, gold for the things of gold
and silver for the things of silver. Who
then will offer willingly, consecrating
himself today to the Lord?”
Then the leaders of fathers’ houses
made their freewill offerings, as did also
the leaders of the tribes, the commanders
of thousands and of hundreds, and the
officers over the king’s work.

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

They gave for the service of the house
of God 5,000 talents and
10,000 darics of gold, 10,000 talents of
silver, 18,000 talents of bronze and
100,000 talents of iron.
And whoever
had precious stones gave them to the
treasury of the house of the Lord, in the
care of Jehiel the Gershonite.

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

Then the people rejoiced because they
had given willingly, for with a whole heart
they had offered freely to the Lord.
David the king also rejoiced greatly.

1 Chronicles 29:1-9 (ESV)

David’s Devotion

Eased the burden of his fellow workers –
1 Chr 29:2

So
I have provided for the house of
my God
, so far as I was able, the gold for
the things of gold, the silver for the
things of silver, and the bronze for the
things of bronze, the iron for the things
of iron, and wood for the things of
wood, besides great quantities of onyx
and stones for setting, antimony, colored
stones, all sorts of precious stones
and marble.

1 Chronicles 29:2 (ESV)

For David said, “Solomon my son is
young and inexperienced, and the house
that is to be built for the Lord must be
exceedingly magnificent, of fame and
glory throughout all lands.
I will
therefore make preparation for it
.” So
David provided materials in great
quantity before his death.

1 Chronicles 22:5 (ESV)

“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on
Moses’ seat,
so do and observe whatever
they tell you, but not the works they
do. For they preach, but do not
practice.
They tie up heavy burdens
,
hard to bear, and lay them on people’s
shoulders, but they themselves are not
willing to move them with their finger.

Matthew 22:2-4 (ESV)

David’s Devotion

Eased the burden of his fellow workers –
1 Chr 29:2

For we do not want you to be unaware,
brothers, of the affliction we experienced
in Asia. For we were so utterly
burdened
beyond our strength
 that we despaired
of life itself.
Indeed, we felt that we had
received the sentence of death. But that
was to make us rely not on ourselves but
on God who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:8-11 (ESV)

10
He delivered us from such a deadly
peril, and he will deliver us. On him
we have set our hope that he will
deliver us again.
11
You also must
help us by prayer
, so that many will
give thanks on our behalf for the
blessing granted us through the
prayers of many.

2 Corinthians 1:8-11 (ESV)

David’s Devotion…

Eased the burden of his fellow workers – 1 Chr 29:2
Came at cost to himself – 1 Chr 29:3-5a

Moreover, in addition to all that I have
provided for the holy house, I have a treasure
of my own
of gold and silver, and because of
my devotion to the house of my God I give it
to the house of my God:
3,000 talents of
gold, of the gold of Ophir, and 7,000 talents of
refined silver, for overlaying the walls of the
house,
and for all the work to be done by
craftsmen, gold for the things of gold and silver
for the things of silver.

1 Chronicles 29:3-5a (ESV)

14
With great pains
 I have provided
for the house of the Lord 100,000
talents of gold, a million talents of
silver, and bronze and iron beyond
weighing, for there is so much of it;
timber and stone, too, I have
provided. To these you must add.

1 Chronicles 22:14 (ESV)

24
But the king said to Araunah, “No,
but I will buy it from you for a price.
I will not offer burnt offerings to
the Lord my God
that cost me
nothing
.” So David bought the
threshing floor and the oxen for fifty
shekels of silver.

2 Samuel 24:19 (ESV)

So if there is any encouragement in
Christ, any comfort from love,
any participation in the Spirit,
any affection and
sympathy,
complete my joy by
being of the same mind, having the
same love, being in full accord and
of one mind.

Philippians 2:1-4 (ESV)

Do nothing from selfish
ambition or conceit, but
in humility
count others more
significant than
yourselves
Let each of
you look not only to his own
interests, but also to the interests
of others.

Philippians 2:1-4 (ESV)

Give
, and it will be given to you.
Good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, running over,
will be put into your lap. For with
the measure you use it will be
measured back to you.”

Luke 6:38 (ESV)

16
By this we know love, that he laid down
his life for us, and
we ought to lay down
our lives for the brothers
17
But if
anyone has the world’s goods and sees his
brother in need, yet closes his heart
against him, how does God’s love abide
in him?
18
Little children, let us not love in
word or talk but in deed and in truth.

1 John 3:16-18 (ESV)

David’s Devotion…

Eased the burden of his fellow workers – 1 Chr 29:2
Came at cost to himself – 1 Chr 29:3-5a
Continued even when he did not get his
way – 1 Chr 29:1

And David the king said to all
the assembly, “Solomon my son,
whom alone God has chosen
,
is young and inexperienced, and
the work is great, for the palace
will not be for man but for
the Lord God.

1 Chronicles 29:1 (ESV)

Then King David rose to his feet and
said: “Hear me, my brothers and my
people.
I had it in my heart
to build a
house of rest for the ark of the covenant
of the Lord and for the footstool of our
God, and I made preparations for
building.
But God said
to me, ‘You may
not build a house for my name, for you
are a man of war and have shed blood.’

1 Chronicles 28:2-5 (ESV)

Yet the Lord God of Israel chose me
from
all my father’s house
to be king
over
Israel forever. For he chose Judah as leader, and
in the house of Judah my father’s house, and
among my father’s sons he took pleasure in me
to make me king over all Israel.
And of all my
sons (for the Lord has given me many sons)
he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the
throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.

1 Chronicles 28:2-5 (ESV)

20
Now to him who is able to do
far more abundantly
than
all that we ask or
think
, according to the power at
work within us,
21
to him be glory
in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations,
forever and ever. Amen.

In 1 Chronicles 29:1-9, King David expresses his devotion to God's temple by providing generous offerings of gold, silver, bronze, and other materials. He emphasizes the importance of the temple as a sacred place for God. This act symbolizes David's commitment to honoring God and building a place of worship. The verses from Corinthians and Ephesians further highlight the significance of believers as God's temple, emphasizing the sacredness and unity among them.
