The Louvre was not a museum
when it first built. It began as a fortress
on the outskirt of Paris in 1190. The
French King Auguste decided to build
defensive walls around the city of
Paris. The Louvre was the western
bulwark of those walls. It was a royal
castle with high walls and a round
tower.
