Visualising Roadmaps Techniques and templates for creating a one-page summary roadmap
Introduction An effective, impactful roadmap lays out the journey from status quo to vision: from where you are now to where you want to be. Sometimes it also needs to present a little history: what led you to this point. Tips Use colour to identify phases or workstreams. Provide a summary of what each milestone will deliver. Who will be impacted? What will they get? Maps have a rich visual library to draw from. We have included some of the relevant in-built Office icons at the end of this pack. Or you can try The Noun Project. If using either of the first two templates below (roads with perspective) they can be flipped around so that the eye is drawn either from far away towards you or vice versa. Remember most readers will expect to start at the left. Some roadmaps split into clear phases. Others have distinct parallel workstreams. Many have both. A good roadmap will show enough detail to allow people to understand the components. But it will not drown them in detail. A roadmap doesn t have to have a timeline, it can be a sequence of activities. In fact, it may be dangerous to include firm dates: a roadmap is often produced as part of a strategy, before a programme has been mobilised to do robust planning. This pack gives you 5 templates to use as a starting point. You can mix and match styles, and adapt as far as you want. (Please see the legal bit at the end about sharing this deck.) 2

The connectors lines and arcs that make up this line can be moved around and resized very easily. To make sure that the lines are completely horizontal, right-click, select Size and Position and make sure the height is zero. And to keep the bends circular, hold down Shift while you are resizing them to maintain the aspect ratio. The curves lines are simple curved connectors. They are connected to a series of small invisible boxes that have no fill or outline. To move or copy them, you can drag-select around the area where one of the curves leaves or joins the straight line. Or open the Selection Pane (Home>Arrange> ). Sunrise roadmap Platform Tool Tool This format can be useful where there are a large number of initiatives and projects in a portfolio over a long period of time. In the outer rings there is more space to reflect the fact that there is likely to be greater granularity of detail on the composition of the programme in the near future. Further out in time the blocks are likely to be large phases or programmes not yet planned in detail. Avoid including large numbers of dependencies.
