The Catcher in the Rye Symbolism Essay
The Task Choose a novel or short story in which symbolism is a significant feature. Discuss how the writer s use of this feature enhances your understanding of character and/ or theme in the text as a whole.
What is symbolism? Symbols are objects, characters, figures, or colours used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. What are the key symbols in the novel? The red hunting hat; the ducks in Central Park; the Museum of Natural History; the catcher in the rye fantasy itself
In groups: You will be assigned one of the symbols and tasked with producing a poster of some kind which displays: When the symbol features Its significance at this point What it represents in relation to character and/or theme
Holdens red hunting hat Represents H s uniqueness and individuality; desire to be different; non- conformist attitude Relate this to his school record and comments on Pencey Prep; his scorn of what is considered success by society; his loathing of materialism etc. Say that the hat helps to show that he is out of step with the conservative, affluent post-war society in which the novel is set HOWEVER, the hat also represents H s central conflict: his need for isolation versus his need to fit in and experience companionship and love Find examples of when he mentions wearing it [there is a self- consciousness to this], how he is wearing it and who is around or not at the time Finally, discuss how it features in the novel s climactic carousel scene
The ducks in the Central Park lagoon His curiosity about where the ducks go in winter suggests a kind of youthfulness and innocence not often seen in H s character. How can this be connected to the theme[s]? Think about when they are mentioned. His concern for the ducks and the way in which his questions are received represents H s compassionate side and the world s indifference [as he perceives it, at least] They are a symbol of flight, escape Perseverance in an inhospitable environment [the pond itself]; change that is cyclical, not final. Connect this to the fragility of life of which H. is acutely aware because of Allie s death.
The Museum of Natural History The displays appeal because they are frozen and unchanging; the museum represents the world H. wishes he could live in the world of his catcher in the rye fantasy However, HE has changed every time he returns which troubles him because ? When he reaches the museum [in Chapter 16], he won t go inside why not? And, interestingly, he puts on his hunting hat Think about what connects the displays H. describes specifically
The catcher in the rye fantasy Explain what is going on when this features in the novel When did Salinger first allude to it, though? The fall which H. has to stop represents what? This is only one aspect of the symbolism: it also represents his fear of growing up and facing the adult world. Consider to what extent H. is hiding behind this impossible dream, using a naively simplistic depiction of the phony adult world and the perfect innocence of childhood. Ironically, H. was misquoting the lyric, which could be seen to suggest..? Connect your discussion of this symbol to the climax and H s dawning realisation as regards the fall .
