The content revolves around interpreting a cartoonist's message, discussing the cause of a car problem, exploring the limitations of mechanics in dealing with supernatural aspects, and delving into the principles of science and its ability to study the natural world. It emphasizes the distinction between natural and supernatural phenomena, the measurability of scientific study, and the role of observation in scientific inquiry.

  1. SUNSETS, SOULS AND SENSES

  2. What do you think the cartoonist was trying to communicate? What do you personally think is the cause of the car's problem?

  3. Let's take a vote as to what is causing the problem. Why did you choose your answer? Why wouldn't a mechanic think it is a demon?

  4. A mechanic has no way of seeing a demon, let alone fixing or getting rid of one. A mechanic does not know if demons exist because they are not measurable. Mechanics can only deal with material, measurable things ---the engine and its parts. This is anaturalcause which explains the naturally occurring event.

  5. NOTES

  6. SCIENCE: the investigation of the natural world through observation

  7. Science can only study what is: 1. NATURAL- it occurs in nature due to physical processes that can be observed and measured. Anything that is not natural is considered SUPERNATURAL -beyond the natural.

  8. 2. MEASURABLE-it can bedirectlyor indirectly observed using the senses Direct observation: using your 5 senses Indirect observation: using instruments to observe what human senses cannot detect

  9. Task: GROUP A ONLY Can it be studied by science? Work with your shoulder partner to place a check mark in the appropriate column. DO NOT BEGIN GROUP B YET.

  10. Task: GROUP B What senses are used to study each item? Work with your shoulder partner to place a check mark in the appropriate column. Circle items that can only be observed using instruments to help.

  11. Non-sciences A PROTOSCIENCE is an area of study MAY BE an emerging science. New technology has been developed to observe what science could not study before. A PSEUDOSCIENCE is an area of study that claims to be science, but does not meet all of the criteria.
