SUMMER INTERNSHIPS By Ayush Jain
Timeline Preparation Interviews Practice
Preparation 1) Become fluent in atleast one language. I chose C++. Source: Hackerrank
Preparation 2) Learn Greedy, DP algorithms and some easy data structures. Source: Algorithmic Toolbox and Data Structures course from DSA specialization on Coursera.
Preparation 3) Start solving problems on Codeforces, InterviewBit, Leetcode etc. CF: Start with A,B of Div. 2 and A,B,C of Div. 3 IB: All buckets other than graph LeetCode: Search problems with tags
Preparation 4) Making a resume Include CGPA, Work Experience, Courses/Electives, Skills, Achievements. Online Courses and Projects: Show your areas of interest, practical knowledge etc. Can be discussed during your interviews.
Practice 1) Learn the difficult data structure and its algorithms. Source: Algorithms on Graphs course on Coursera 2) Complete InterviewBit 3) Start giving lots of contests online. Live and Virtual Contests on CF, Leetcode etc. 4) Prestigious Competitions: Google Kickstart, Facebook Hackercup etc.
Practice 5) Learn details of a programming language. Eg: memory management, preprocessors, macros, header files, namespace, function calls etc. 6) Learn concepts of OOP. Sources: yet another insignificant Programming Notes (ntu.edu.sg), Javatpoint, w3schools 7) Learn concepts of DBMS and SQL.
Interviews Step 1: Online Test 1) Look for problems asked in other colleges on GFG. 2) Ask your friends in other colleges. 3) Implement the most optimal solution you have even if it exceeds constraints. 4) Score in non-coding part of the test also matters. 5) Speed matters.
Interviews Step 2: Online interviews 1) Problems are harder than the coding test but the interviewer will give you some hints and bring you back on the right track if you get distracted. 2) Talk with the interviewer as much as possible and communicate your thoughts while solving a problem. 3) Always ask questions at the end.
Timeline Preparation Till July mid Practice Till August end Interviews
Final Tips Find people who are preparing for the internship season and discuss topics and compare progress with them. Don t lose hope if you can t get shortlisted. If you are not able to clear interviews, there is some problem. Figure it out and fix it.
