ETHICAL CONDUCT & GAMBLING Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Ethical Conduct & Gambling Responsibility to report any suspected NCAA violations. If asked questions by coaches or administration related to potential NCAA violations, you have a duty to answer honestly and provide accurate and complete information. Gambling Don t Bet on It! Definition: putting forth something of value for the opportunity to win something of value Cannot gamble on any sport that the NCAA sponsors (professional or amateur) Examples include fantasy leagues, March Madness pools.
Ethical Conduct & Gambling Gambling Don t Bet on It! Do not share any information from the Athletic Training room or the team meetings with individuals involved in gambling activities. Injuries, starting lineups, etc. Being found in violation could result in complete loss of eligibility.
HAZING Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Hazing The NCAA defines Hazing as: Any act committed against someone joining or becoming a member or maintaining membership in any organization that is humiliating, intimidating or demeaning, or endangers the health and safety of the person. Hazing includes active or passive participation in such acts and occurs regardless of the willingness to participate in the activities.
Hazing The University of Denver does not tolerate Hazing in any fashion (e.g., initiations, carrying bags for seniors, etc.). If you are aware of any acts of hazing, please contact the Compliance Office or your Sport Administrator.
AMATEURISM Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Amateurism In order to be eligible to compete as a Division I student-athlete, you must meet the NCAA s definition of amateur. You will lose your amateur status by: Agreeing (verbally or in writing) to compete on a professional team. Accepting benefits from or agreeing (verbally or in writing) to be represented by an agent for the purpose of marketing you as a professional athlete.

Name, Image, Likeness Colorado SB20-123 An institution shall NOT provide compensation or a student-athlete or prospect nor shall they prevent a student-athlete from seeking representation. A student-athlete who enters an NIL contract must disclose the contract to the athletic department within 72 hours. Disclosure can be done using the INFLCR Software
Name, Image, Likeness Denver Policy 1. Any compensation a student-athletes receives from an organization (cash, product, discount, etc.) must be received as payment for providing some service or benefit to the organization in return (social media post, advertisement promotion, etc.). 2. NIL is not a pay for play structure; NCAA rules related to recruiting inducements, and extra benefits, remain in effect. 3. You CANNOT engage in NIL activities while engaging in official team activities.

DU staff, coaches, or boosters are NOT permitted to be involved in the operation, or promotion or compensation of student-athlete s or prospective student-athlete s NIL activities. 5. Student-athletes are prohibited from using DU logos/marks for any NIL activities. 6. Student-athletes are prohibited from using DU facilities for NIL activities (written approval/rental fee required on a case-by-case basis).
Name, Image, Likeness Denver Policy - Continued 7. Student-athletes are not permitted to enter a contract with an organization that conflicts with NCAA rules (gambling, banned substances). 8. Student-athletes are not permitted to enter a contract with an organization that conflicts with a current DU sponsor or is not in line with DU s core values.

EXCHANGE MARKET
Name, Image, Likeness Professional Representation Student-athletes are permitted to obtain professional representation in relation to contract negotiation, legal matters, and representation for NIL opportunities. DU staff, coaches, boosters, or any other individual associated with the university may NOT serve as professional representation or assist in identifying, selecting, arranging, or providing payment for professional representation. All professional representation (no matter how minor) must be disclosed to the athletic department through the INFLCR software system.
Name, Image, Likeness: International Students International student-athletes should consult with the University of Denver International Office prior to engaging in any NIL activities to determine how it may impact their Visa status. Student-athletes should be aware that receiving compensation for NIL could have an impact on their financial aid, especially those receiving Pell Grants and other need-based grants. Student-athletes are encouraged to reach out to the University of Denver Office of Financial Aid for more guidance.

Extra Benefits Despite the new NIL rules, Extra Benefit rules still apply! Can only receive certain benefits for being an athlete, including, but not limited to: Complimentary tickets for your sport (4 per contest) DU issued equipment and apparel Meals and snacks Awards associated with individual or team performance (generally provided by DU, Athletic Conference or the NCAA)
Extra Benefits Examples of Extra Benefits that are NOT PERMISSIBLE to receive: Reduced cost services/discounts that aren t available to the general public Free or discounted apparel, equipment, or gear Free or reduced housing costs Loans from a coach or booster When in doubt, please reach out to Compliance. RECRUITING Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Recruiting Official Visits Host expectations official visits The following activities will not be tolerated and may lead to disciplinary sanctions: Sexual harassment, drugs or alcohol, gambling, theft or property damage, and hazing) Student-Host Money - for entertainment within 30 miles of DU(going to the movies, snacks, etc.) Cannot be used to buy souvenirs or other tangible goods.
Recruiting Social Media Can have contact with any prospect as long as it is not directed by coaches May not post any info that publicizes a recruit s visit to campus (including retweets from posts made by the recruit) Telephone calls and Text Messages May receive calls/text from a prospect. May initiate calls/texts to a prospect if the call/text is not arranged by the coaching staff
ELIGIBILITY Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Eligibility 5 Year Rule Five-year Rule: Five years to complete four seasons of competition DU philosophy is to graduate our student-athletes in four years 5th year of competition at DU due to injury or a redshirt year is at coach s discretion and athletic aid is determined on a case-by-case basis Institutional aid (merit, DUEG, etc.) is only offered for 4 years (12 quarters)
Eligibility Season of Competition How is a season of competition triggered? Any competition, regardless of time (one minute of one game counts). Exceptions: Volleyball and Soccer spring season Lacrosse Fall season Preseason exhibitions/Practice scrimmages (if designated as such by NCAA) Alumni game or fundraising activity if the event is exempted from the max number of contests for the season
TRANSFER PORTAL Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Transfer Portal All student-athletes are afforded the use of the one-time transfer exception which allows you to transfer once during your collegiate career and be eligible to compete immediately if the following conditions are met: You transferred while academically eligible and you have not previously transferred from a 4-year university; No tampering occurred; and Written notification of intent to transfer was provided to the institution within the following transfer portal windows

ACADEMIC STANDARDS Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Academic Standards Must be enrolled in 12 or more credits at ALL times (full-time) 8 hours for Graduate Students Must pass at least 6 degree applicable credits per quarter Must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA 3.0 GPA for Graduate Students Good academic standing according to DU Freshmen: Must earn 36 credits by Fall of Soph. year All SAs: Must earn 27 credits in Fall/Winter/Spring (can t count summer)
Academic Standards Percentage Toward Degree 40% of degree by Junior year 60% of degree by Senior year 80% of degree by 5th year
Academic Standards Must declare a major and required minor(s) by the time start of Junior year Consult with academic advisor if changing major may impact eligibility You are responsible for knowing the requirements of your program and your progress toward degree Must pass an average of 15-16 credits per quarter to graduate in four years
FINANCIAL AID Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Financial Aid DU athletic scholarships are one-year in duration with opportunity to renew at the end of every academic year Athletically-related aid can be canceled during the term of the award if student-athlete: Becomes ineligible Engages in misconduct (determined by University authority) Withdraws from team (quits) Violation of non-athletically related conditions (team rules) Provides notification of intent to transfer Athletically-related aid can be canceled or reduced at the end of the award period (end of academic year) for any reason, including athletic performance. Student-athlete must be provided an opportunity for a hearing.
Financial Aid Tuition award Tuition for 12-18 hours only Does not cover overload credits Grad students please make sure you are communicating your academic plan with your coaches so we can ensure your scholarships accurately reflect your course load. Room and board On-Campus Housing double occupancy room rate at Towers or Halls/Dimond If you choose to live in more expensive housing, the additional cost will be your responsibility to cover Meals if you are on full scholarship, please make sure you are selecting the 175-swipe meal plan (maximum). Once you ve run out, additional meal swipes will be at your own expense.
Financial Aid Fees Covers standard fees associated with attendance (health and counseling, tech, and activity) Does not cover health insurance (be sure to waive if you are covered under parents) Does not cover course fees (e.g., DCB Microsoft Certification, lab fees, art fees) Books Can only cover required books noted on syllabus, and not recommended books or supplies Books must be returned to student services office following each quarter If academic services was unable to provide you with your necessary books, please reach out to your academic advisor to work through the book reimbursement process
Read (AND PAY) Your Bills!! All scholarships are disbursed 10 days prior to the first day of classes for each quarter Anytime you receive a bill it is important that you open the email and act on it, even if you are on a full athletic scholarship There are fees and other charges that your scholarship cannot cover If you ignore charges, you will accrue late fees that can add up over time If you are unsure if a charge will be covered by your scholarship, ask Jim Kramer, Director of Finance
COMPLIMENTARY ADMISSIONS Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Complimentary Admissions A student-athlete may not: Receive payment from any source for his/her complimentary admissions and may not assign them for any item of value Sell or exchange complimentary admissions for money or any item of value to anyone, including teammates or other student-athletes
PRACTICE AND COMPETITION Fall Student-Athlete Meeting 2023-24
Countable Activities In Season Maximum of 4 hours per day, 20 hours per week Must have one day off per week Competition days count as three hours Daily and weekly hour limitations do not apply during preseason practice or institutional vacation periods No practice activities on the same day following a competition. Class cannot be missed to attend practice, EVER.
