Children from working class backgrounds are: less likely to attend nursery. more likely to start school unable to read. more likely to fall behind in reading, writing and number skills. more likely to be put in lower sets. are less likely to go to University. Do Now Task: In pairs, come up with a list of possible explanations for the points above. S&C: Rank your explanations from the most to the least important.

  4. Social class and educational achievement A child s social class has a massive influence on whether he or she does well or badly at school. Children from middle class families on average do better at school than children from working class families. Sociological explanations: Internal factors (factors within school e.g. teacher s expectations and pupil subcultures) External factors (factors outside of school e.g. family background) Q: Can you give any examples? DISCUSS

  5. External factor: Cultural deprivation GLOSSARY: A lack of values, attitudes and skills. Working class pupils underachieve because they lack the values, attitudes and skills to do well at school (which middle class pupils have). Examples: Working class families are less likely to visit museums Working class parents are less likely to read with their children. Can you think of other examples of cultural deprivation?
