Definitions Shoplifting The unauthorized removal of merchandise from a store without paying for it. Employee theft Any stealing, use, or misuse of an employer's assets without permission.
Statistics Shoplifting statistics 1 out of 11 Americans are shoplifters On average, there are 550,000 shoplifting incidents per day More than 13 billion dollars worth of products are stolen from retailers each year. There are approximately 27 million shoplifters in America today 75% of shoplifters are adults where 25% are juveniles On average, shoplifters are caught only 1 in 48 times Employee theft statistics 75% of employees steal at least once 37.5% of employees steal multiple times 50 million dollars are lost annually due to employee theft Employee theft is the fastest growing crime in America More than 30% of business bankruptcies are due to employee theft 60% of employees would steal if they knew they wouldn t get caught
Trends Shoplifting trends In 2020, shoplifting values averaged $310.11 which was an increase of 13 cents from the values in 2019. Employee theft trends In 2020, 26,463 were apprehended, which is a decrease of 20.3% from 2019 In 2019, there was 32,941 apprehensions of employees and in 2018 there was 32,41 within just 22 large retail companies Theft reached an all time high of 61.7 billion in 2019, up from 50.6 billion in 2018. 158,158 shoplifters were apprehended in 2020 which was a decrease of 43.8% from 2019. In 2018, employee theft values was around $1,361 which was a 30% increase from 2017.
Criminological theories Social disorganization theory Definition- explains why shoplifters feel they need to steal. It states that a person's residential location is more significant than a person's characteristics The differential disorganization theory Definition- explains why employees steal. It states where criminal behavior is learned from. Explanation- people learn how to steal through interacting with other people who know how to steal. They learn all the tricks and tips from other shoplifters. Example- an employee who has stolen from other jobs in the past talks to another employee about it giving that employee a general idea on how to steal and get away with it. Explanation- A person either adult or juvenile may steal due to what's going on in their current environment around them such as poverty or unemployment Example- A mother steals formula for their child because the mother doesn t have enough money to buy it due to getting laid off from their job.
Reasons why store theft occurs Shoplifters Poverty Sell the stolen goods for profit Adrenaline rush Peer pressure Addiction to the experience To get nice things Employees Poverty Unsuccessful promotion or transfer Conflict with manager or supervisor Temptation and opportunity Feeling overworked or underpaid
Methods Shoplifters Conceal items in their clothing, purse, backpack, Stoller or even umbrellas Simply walking out acting normal Using metal lined bags to prevent security tags from setting off alar systems Switching higher priced tags with lower priced tags Bringing items into a restroom or fitting room to either put it on or unwrap it Distracting employees by causing a disruption Taking an item from the store directly to the return counter to try and get cash or store credit Employees Taking small amounts of cash from a customer's total purchase amount Taking cash directly from the register Ringing items up as more than what they are and pocketing the difference Giving friends or family members an employee discount or purposely not scan at item or voiding a scan completely.
Loss prevention Definition Any actions taken to reduce the amount of theft in a business. Ideas Have clear policies Employee training Inventory controls Monitor loss trends Organize the store Security systems Minimize cash payments Importance- loss takes away from hard earned profits and can lead to problems that make it hard to stay In business. Loss prevention can help reduce the amount of loss a business accrues.
Step 1- theft training for all employees Step 2- initiate a loss prevention team Loss prevention plan for the holidays Step 3- make sure all security cameras are in place and functioning Step 4- make sure inventory is up to date and valid Step 5- Set a maximum cash payment for any transaction
