SHED Society for Health and Educational Development, founded in 2007 by Lanu Aimol, focuses on providing education and support to children with disabilities and underprivileged children in Assam. The organization runs an integrated school with boarding facilities and vocational training, aiming to help these children become productive citizens and integrate into society. Through community outreach programs and dedicated staff, SHED is making a positive impact on the lives of these children.

  3. HOW IT STARTED Founded by Lanu Aimol in 2007 Initially based in Guwahati in rented space. Moved to Sonapur (1hr from Guwahati) to land SHED acquired Goal is to : Provide a safe and positive learning environment for children with disabilities An integrated school for children with and without disabilities to promote interactions between children and for them to be more productive citizens Expanded to support boarding facilities for children with disabilities Run by dedicated team of Special Ed teachers and care givers

  4. SHED Brief Background Sonapur Founded : 2007 Location : Sonapur, Assam Non-Profit Registered under Society Registration Act of 1960 with FCRA Clearance. Founder : Lanu Aimol (Graduate Deg from Osmania Unv on Metal Retardation) Guwahati Focus : Children with disabilities and underprivileged children in the nearby area have no access to a decent education. Children with disabilities do not integrated into mainstream society SHED : - Runs a integrated school with boarding facility for the underprivileged children and children with disabilities (Mental Retardation, Autism and Hearing Impaired) - Provides proper education and training to these children to increase self confidence, self worth and help become better and productive citizens. - Facility supports hostellers, full time day scholars and evening day scholars. Children with disabilities interact with evening day scholars that help in integration of these children. 4

SHED History Founded in 2007 by Lanu Aimol (Lanu Aimol has Graduate degree in Metal Retardation from National Institute for Mentally Handicapped, Osmania University). 2008 2012 : Started as day school for differently-abled and underprivileged children in Bhetapara, a suburb of Guwahati. School was at rented facility. By 2012 had 23 students. 2013 : Acquired own land in Sonapur. (~50km from Guwahati.) and build school structure and limited hostel facility. Started with new students from local area hostellers, day scholars (mostly disabled) and evening students 2014-2015: ASHA involvement from Nov 2014 - yearly funding for Teachers salaries &one-time funding for Pukka classrooms, new kitchen cum dining hall, new hostel facility. Increased Student count to 46 students from 23 students (46 = 13 hostellers + 33 day scholars) 2016-2017: Increased Student count : 66 (23 hostellers, 42 day scholars) Vocational training setup at school : 10 sewing machines 20 trainees currently enrolled- 5 from hosteller 2017-2018 : Student count : 62 (23 hostellers, 39 day scholars Started twice monthly community awareness program for local people on disability and SHED Completed construction of new Fence and Gate from Asha one-time funds. Vocational Training expansion tailoring and flower making for community, parents in addition to Hearing Impaired Computer lab 2 computer NIHN (July) last year + furniture Mr Hiren Saika primary person took over day-to-day management from Lanu Aimol. Lanu closely involved.5

  6. SHED ASHA Seattle Engagement SHED working with Asha Seattle since 2014. ASHA Funding Teachers Salary (recurring) For Dec 14 - Mar 15 Rs 2,24,000 For April 15 Mar 16 Rs 6,72,000 For April 16 Mar 17 Rs 7,39,000 For April 17 Mar 18 Rs 8,13,000 One time funding : 2014 Dec : For construction of 5 pukka classrooms, kitchen cum dining hall and conversion of multi-purpose room to hostel. Completed in June 2015 2017 June : Rs4lac - For construction of new fence and new gate. SHED was able to increase student count (both hostellers/day scholars/evening students) and provide a healthier/safer environment with updated facilities and teachers salaries. Most recent Site Visit : Feb 3rd 2017 (by Amit Rajkhowa) Next visit planned : in July 2018 (by Nabanita)

Office room with attached bathroom Additional boy and girls toilets for day school New Fence and Gate Current Student Count : Students as of March 2017 Students as of April 2018 66 Students Total Hostellers : 23 (19 MR/Autism + 4 Hearing Impaired) Full time (all day) Day Scholars : 20 (13 MR/Autism + 7 Hearing impaired) Evening Day Scholars 3-6pm : 23 (no disabilities/all attend Govt School) 62 Students Total Hostellers : 23 (19 MR/Autism + 4 Hearing Impaired) Full time (all day) Day Scholars : 39 (17 MR/Autism + 7 Hearing impaired) Current Evening Day Scholars 3-6pm : Target Evening Day Scholars 3-6pm starting June : ~20 7

Wanoichoi, B.Sc Nursing (visits once weekly) Dr Anil Kalita (visits once every 2 weeks) 8

  9. Update on Boundary Wall and Gate (Asha one-time funding in July 2017) Asha provided one-time funding of Rs 4 lac in July 2017 for a concrete wall and new gate. Salary comparison to nearby regions : 1. Special Educators (all Diploma Holders) working in NGOs in Guwahati (30ks away) are getting Rs10K-15 PM. 2. If working under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan(RTE), salaries started from Rs23K- 40K PM. 3. Care givers work with the children 24hrs a day, it is challenging especially few are single mothers with child. Required for increased cost of living, improve food quality, increase costs for maintenance, better hygenic within hostels areas, upkeep of hostel and school facilities, general repairs etc. Reduced dependence on individual contributions. 2. Day scholar Rs300 pm (optional for day scholars) ASHA funding for salaries + ~Rs8.9 lac will enable day to day operations at SHED for 2018-2019

Long term plans on Expansion One time funding for Office : Add 1 room for office - 1 room 20mx15m area need to build 3 walls to extend current facilities (Approx Rs2-2.5lac) One time funding request for Green House Green House - Use a program from Govt of India & Assam for Green House Enable locally grown vegetables to be produced year-around Enable children to participate for better mental and physical well being Costs : Approx cost Rs5-6lac (includes all material, installation) Govt will finance 75% of cost (Rs3.7-4.5lac) and SHED needs to finance 25% (Rs1.25-1.5lac) Green House size 1 katha (720 sqft), 7 yrs warranty Student and Student Facilities Expansion : Add 10 hostellers and 10 day scholars 1 Special Ed Teacher (Rs 8652 pm * 12 = Rs1.03lac yearly) One time funding for hostel Expansion Add 1 more room in hostel - 1 room 20mx15m area need to build 3 walls to extend current hostel.   14. Site Visit Report 1/2 Visited SHED on Sunday Feb 5th, 2017. Visit coincided with bi-monthly community awareness program where parents of students, people from nearby villages visit SHED. Goal of this program is to educate the nearby villagers about mental disabilities, reduce the fear and increase tolerance. Talked to room full of people. Met with couple of parents their feedback was that their child liked the school, the interactions with the similar students without feeling out of place. They prefer to come to school vs staying at home, hence was visiting even on Sunday. Met with each staff separately common theme was they liked the students, some requested us to support the salary request, 2 of the care givers are single mothers with child, few requested to fix the fencing and gate. Toured the facility classrooms, dining area + kitchen, multi-purpose room + training/sewing area, boys hostel rooms, girls hostel room and surveyed the compound.

  15. Site Visit Report 2/2 Met with few students : Arati Ekka Arati is 14yrs old with Cerebral Palsy. Has been with SHED for sometime. She is intelligent and can do limited reading writing. She is independent in self-help skills Anuj Kumar Bora - joined Parijat Academy (school for low income families), he could not cope up there, came to SHED and now independent in self-help skills Sunny Goswami - Sunny 17yrs with sever autistic. Sunny was rejected from other schools in Guwahati in 2011. He is now self sufficient and independent in self-help skills . Success story: Olympia Talukdar - Olympia is 11 year, mildly intellectually disabled, she came to SHED in 2014, could not write at all, was in hostel. After close attention from Special Ed teacher Madhumita Saikia, she progressed to go to regular school.

SHED Special Programs One time Govt programs (not needed for day to day operations of SHED) 2016-17 - National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disability, Chennai (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India) - Awareness and training program for states of Manipur and Meghalaya ~Rs38 lac 15 programs held in both states. 2015-16 - Indian Institute for Entrepreneurship, Guwahati (ESDP - Entrepreneurs Skill Dev program) ~Rs6 lac - for special ed program.
