Seven Paradigm Shifts To Turn India Upside-Down
Years ago, why did you begin working in theological education? What were your hopes, your dreams, your visions?
7 1 6 2 Seven Paradigm Shifts that will help us fulfill our visions even better. 5 3 4
A New Goal In the new paradigm, we focus intentionally on building the whole person. 1
India needs healthy leaders. What are the characteristics of healthy leaders?
We must build healthy leaders.
A New Process A holistic goal requires a holistic process. 2
How did Jesus build the Twelve?
In the new paradigm, we implement a holistic process that gives strong and integrated attention to the Four Dynamics of Transformation. All four of these dynamics must be strongly present in an effective leader development process.
A New Design In the new paradigm, we intentionally design learning experiences as Jesus did. 3
You have just done design when you: Create a mentoring relationship for one young leader Intentionally give an emerging leader a single challenging assignment Initiate a coaching relationship for an existing leader Connect a leader with an intercessor who will regularly pray for him Make opportunities for mature leaders to spend time with young leaders, sharing their lives and experiences
You have just done design when you: Take an emerging leader with you on a ministry trip Hold someone accountable in order to help them grow Provide opportunities for spiritual experiences for those you are building Enhance your teaching by inviting questions or by interacting with the participants Create a single learning experience for one of your children
Leaders Build Leaders We need to reconnect the two leaders do ministry work and they build leaders at the same time. 4
This is what Jesus did. And He appointed twelve (whom He also named apostles) so that they might be with Him and He might send them out to preach and have authority to cast out demons. (Mark 3:14 15)
This is what Paul did. You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:10-11, 14-17)
Churches Build Leaders 5
In a healthy church everyone builds others: Parents build their children (Eph. 6:4; Deut. 6:4-9; 11:18-21). Existing believers nurture new disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). The older women train the younger women (Tit. 2:3-5). The mature men teach the younger men (2 Tim. 2:2). Leaders build leaders (Mark 3:14). This disciple-making culture in the church is the soil in which leaders naturally and organically grow.
This paradigm shift has the potential to address both crises of the quality and quantity of leaders today: Multiplication Holistic development The right people receive training Flexibility Self-support Security in restricted countries Ongoing, lifelong leader development Leader care Effective evaluation
Church Planting Through Leader Development 6
Jesus vision was for hundreds of thousands of churches around the world in every people group. Jesus did not, however, personally plant a single church! Instead, He built leaders, and those leaders then planted churches and turned the world upside-down.
The Centrality of the Person of Jesus Christ in Christian Leadership 7
Jesus said that everything He did and said flowed from His inner union with the Father: The Jews therefore marveled, saying, How is it that this Man has learning, when He has never studied? So Jesus answered them, My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. (John 7:15-16; cf. Acts 4:13) I speak of what I have seen with My Father [I have] told you the truth that I heard from God (John 8:38, 40)
the Son can do nothing of His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. (John 5:19) Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own authority, but the Father who dwells in Me does His works. (John 14:10)
Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the Vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. (John 15:4-5) The primary task of leader development is to build men and women who know God and live in union with Him.
