What makes this “marketplace” / service
registry different?

Open and Comprehensive
It is planned that it will be open to register resources and tools from
academic and commercial resource providers for no fee.
It will support concepts of users, research groups, communities,
organizations, departments, and projects with fine grain access
control.
Bottom-up
All organizations or groups that have resources they share within a
lab, within an organization, or between organizations can register
them here and share them securely. The marketplace will support
internal resource sharing as well as external resource sharing.
Currently organizations have tools for managing in-house resource
sharing, but they are expensive to maintain and limited generally to
internal use. It is thought the marketplace will allow internal and
external resource sharing.
Why do we think it will work?

Resource providers
EGI already has over 350 resource providers as part of EGI’s federated
infrastructure.
Applications and cloud resources
Application database which has already hundreds of applications listed, as
well as integration to academic cloud providers.
Instruments and technology services
There are already over 1300 users and over 400 resources in the initial version
of an resource sharing platform, which is used productively by four
institutions across two countries and has strong interest as well as test users
from several other institutions across five other countries.
Organizations
EGI already has hundreds of organizations affiliated with it via the NGIs.
Business Engagement
Revising the business engagement strategy of EGI to provide commercial and
academic cloud solutions.
Actions and Activities

management with e-Grant).
Activities
Leverage lessons from Pay4use project and implement.
Provide clear and easy to find information about resources on EGI’s web site.

The Service Registry and Marketplace aims to provide an open and comprehensive platform for researchers to register and share resources across academic and commercial providers. It offers fine-grain access control, supports internal and external resource sharing, and engages a wide network of users and organizations. Leveraging existing resources and infrastructure, this marketplace is poised to facilitate research collaborations and data sharing for the advancement of open science commons.
