ARE YOU A PLAYER OR A SPECTATOR? It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat. MAIN CHARACTERS IN THIS STORY King Ahasuerus/Xerxes: Persian king who ruled over 127 provinces (Egypt to India). Mordecai: Jewish official in the king s court, from tribe of Benjamin, taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar. Esther (star): Called Hadassah (myrtle), Mordecai s cousin, he took her as his own daughter, because her father and mother had died. Haman: Second in charge to the king, hated the Jews, bad guy in the story.
ESTHER OBTAINED FAVOUR 15 And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her. 17 The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. ESTHER 2:15,17 (NKJV)

ESTHER COUNTED THE COST 16 "Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!" ESTHER 4:16 (NKJV)
ESTHER COURAGEOUSLY SAVED HER PEOPLE 3 Then Queen Esther answered and said, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request. ESTHER 7:3 (NKJV)
THE REPRESENTATIVES IN THIS STORY King Ahasuerus: the governments of this world. Haman: the bad guy, Satan, the tempter, liar and deceiver, the one who finally dies on the very thing he designed to kill the good guy. Mordecai: the good guy, Jesus and His righteousness, not hanged on the gallows, but hanged on the cross to defeat the devil. Esther: the church, the bride of Christ, highly favoured and powerful, but full of compassion and wisdom.
THE MAIN ACTOR IN THIS STORY He caused Vashti to lose her place as queen. He caused Esther to have favour and become queen. He caused Mordecai to have access to Esther and the affairs of the kingdom. He caused the decree to kill the Jews to happen over 11 months. He caused Haman to restrain his anger and not kill Mordecai immediately. He caused Esther to have two banquets.
THE MAIN ACTOR IN THIS STORY God caused Ahasuerus to have a sleepless night and read the chronicles. He caused Ahasuerus to honour Mordecai and have Haman killed. HE RULES THE WORLD. HE PRESERVES HIS PEOPLE. HE USES INDIVIDUALS. We are saved and sent to save others!
