In 2nd grade curriculum night, students will focus on developing reading skills, fluency, and comprehension in Language Arts. Math instruction emphasizes base ten notation, addition, subtraction, and shapes. Social Studies covers historical figures in Georgia and the Creek and Cherokee cultures. Science explores applying ideas to phenomena and observing changes in nature. Health education includes growth, body systems, healthy practices, and community health awareness. The YMCA SPLASH Program offers water safety training for students.

  1. WELCOME TO 2NDGRADE CURRICULUM NIGHT

  2. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Language Arts: develop their reading skills develop fluency and comprehension develop vocabulary (word study) read and listen to more complex literature from a variety of genres become independent with the use of the writing process and write in a variety of genres learn specific elements for each type of writing develop more complex written and spoken language

  3. Math: Instructional time should focus on four critical areas: extending understanding of base ten notation building fluency with addition and subtraction using standard units of measure describing and analyzing shapes

  4. Social Studies: In second grade, the various social studies strands become more woven around the historical strand. The history strand focuses on important historical figures in Georgia and the Creek and Cherokee cultures in Georgia. The geography strand emphasizes the geography of Georgia and relates that to the historical study. We also emphasize the positive character traits of the individuals and groups in the historical strand and the basic concept of government.

Science: apply ideas to things in the world push, pull, and manipulate things to see what will happen observe changes to plants and animals as they grow and change observe the changing patterns of the moon and stars become aware of changes that take place form ideas as to whether the changes are natural or manipulated by humans

  6. Health: growth and development body systems compare and contrast healthy and unhealthy practices apply the knowledge of health-risk reduction to the promotion of health understand the relationship between personal and community health

  7. YMCA SPLASH PROGRAM The YMCA offers all of the second grade students in Richmond County the opportunity to participate in the FREE Splash Program. Splash is a water safety program that teaches children how to be safe in and around the water. Deer Chase Second Graders will attend SPLASH TBD (2016-9/26-9/30) Classes will begin at 12:00 for one group and 1:00 for the next group. A YMCA bus takes us to and from the YMCA. The first group leaves at 11:30. The second group leaves at 12:30. The first group returns at 1:30 and the second at 2:30. Students come to school wearing their bathing suit under their clothing every day that week. They need to bring a towel and underclothes in a bag that they will take to the YMCA with them. Permission slips and reminders will be sent home. Students change independently in their own changing room after getting out of the pool. Please dress them in something they can quickly put back on by themselves.

  8. COMMON DAILY ROUTINES Students come in and unpack everything from their book bag. Morning work is given daily. Specials are PE, Music, and Technology. Specials for second grade are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:00 to 11:00. On Tuesday and Thursday specials are 10:30-11:30. Lunch time for second grade is from 11:35-12:05 or 11:40-12:10. Students are expected to copy their homework from the board into their agenda daily. A daily conduct grade is recorded in their agenda.

  9. GRADING POLICY Grading Weights Language Arts Reading = 60% Grammar = 20% Spelling = 20% Math Tests = 50% Quizzes = 30% Classwork = 20% All grades for Science, Social Studies, Health, and Conduct will be averaged equally.

  10. HOMEWORK POLICY Your child will have homework Monday Thursday. All parts of the homework must be completed daily. Parental guidance is greatly appreciated. Parents should sign the agenda nightly to confirm that your child has completed their homework.

  11. TESTING SCHEDULE S.L.O Beginning and end of year assessment to show academic growth I-Ready Diagnostic computer-based test given three times a year to show academic growth (Beg., middle, and end) Classroom assessments to determine mastery of concepts taught

  12. STRATEGIES TO USE AT HOME Read to your child or listen to your child read every night. Correct them in three seconds if they don t know a word. Make flashcards of any words that they don t know. Practice sight words with them and make sure they can read their spelling words. Have them learn their addition and subtraction math facts. Help them study for their tests.

  14. VOLUNTEERS Parents may take the volunteer training class and get a volunteer card if you are interested in helping out at your child s school. You must have a volunteer card to chaperone on a field trip! Parents may not volunteer in the classroom that your child is in. However, you can volunteer in another classroom or you can run copies for your child s grade level. Notices will be sent home to notify you of upcoming parent volunteer classes. Parent volunteers are always welcome and appreciated!

  16. STUDENT AGENDAS Students have been given an agenda that they are to bring back and forth to school every day. You need to sign your child s agenda nightly indicating that you have seen your child s homework and conduct. You may also correspond with your child s teacher through the agenda. It is your child s responsibility to keep up with their agenda for the entire school year.
