What is screening? A determination that an otherwise eligible household has the ability to pay rent on time and to meet the requirements of the lease 1. Properties should have a written screening policy 2. Screening criteria must be applied uniformly to all applicants helps to avoid fair housing violations
What is its primary use? TO PROHIBIT ADMISSION OF CERTAIN INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE: 1. Engaged in drug-related criminal behavior 2. Are subject to a lifetime sex offender registration program 3. A history of abuse of alcohol that interferes with health, safety or right to peaceful enjoyment of premises by other residents.
But. What about Live-in Aides? Live-in Aides should be screened at: 1. Initial occupancy 2. If added to household after initial occupancy
What are they screened for? THE SAME CRITERIA AS OTHER APPLICANTS: Drug and alcohol abuse, criminal activity, lifetime registration as a sex offender. NOTE: You do not screen for the criterion regarding ability to pay rent on time because live-in aides are not responsible for rental payments.
