CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Aim: To provide our coaches with 10 stock games to be used in training when appropriate, with the aim of creating skillful players through an engaging game environment. How: Each game focuses on different facets of the game. Each is named after a particular team and is based on an area of strength of that team (eg. Saracens getting go-forward through their kicking game or the Barbarians getting creative off first phase) Structure: By each game following the simple structure of game zone and skill zone , players will be able to develop technical aspects and put them to practice in the game. The skill zone may be used by a co-coach taking a few players out of the game at a time, or the session following a game-skill-game (whole-part-whole) structure.
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Fiji Touch Fiji Touch Rules: 2-touch game: First touch doesn t count so can continue to go-forward. On second touch, offload or go to ground & lift (must be 2-handed touch tackles) To work on: Go-forward, Continuity, Evasion, Scanning. Skill zone: 1 v 1 evasion/ footwork skills linked to avoiding the 2-handed touch. Stretch & Challenge: Team: 1st touch affords chance to pass. If touched a 2nd time = turnover Individual: Only 1 touch on skillful players = turnover Defence focus Can we get a double-hit to limit go-forward? How could we set up our defence? Do we need sweeping defenders? Attack focus How can we create a 1 v 1 situation? What happens if we move the ball before the 2nd touch? Footwork to evade 2-handed tackle
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Saracens touch Saracens touch Rules: Touch game: each team is allowed one (or more) offside players in attack. If offside player catches a kick on the full, they can play on. To work on: Go-forward, Scanning, Kicking skills. Skill zone: Catching skills under the high- ball. Gradually build up the difficulty in terms of height of ball and amount of competition. Use noodles as distraction. Stretch & Challenge: Team: Can only grubber kick through to offside player. Individual: One-handed catch only for OS player/ Weak foot only for comfortable kickers Defence focus How can we cover the backfield effectively? How can we pressure the attack to limit time for measured kicks? Attack focus How can we create space to put an effective kick in? How can we use the offside player to make space? What skills will the OS player need?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Crusaders touch Crusaders touch Rules: Two players are in a different colour bib to the two teams. They are always on the attacking team (creating an overload). Turnover if the defence can make a square hit as a touch tackle. To work on: Go-forward, Scanning, Passing skills to execute overloads. Skill zone: 2v1 in to 3 or 4v2. Focus on square hips, fixing defender and not drifting with ball. Stretch & Challenge: Team: Two-person tackle (double-hit) leads to a turnover. Individual: If players in bib are touched with one hand = turnover. Attack focus How can we create situations to utilise our overload? What do we need to do on the ball to preserve space? How can we create space without the ball? Defence focus How can we defend effectively against an overload (what type of defence may we have to use?) How can give ourselves the best chance of getting a square or double-hit?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Hurricanes touch Hurricanes touch Rules:On the touch tackle, ball carrier must immediately pop ball up between legs. If the ball touches the floor then a turnover is given. To work on: Support, Continuity. Stretch & Challenge: Team: When a try is scored, 5 team mates must be over try line for it to count. Individual: 1 player can ignore 1st touch but MUST score or T/O Skill zone: Support lines: 2v1 with support runner starting behind ball carrier. Communication & late movement to outwit defender. Attack focus How do we support effectively? How else can we get go-forward apart from taking the tackle? Can we create space for team mates off the ball? Defence focus Can we set traps for the attack to limit their support? In which areas of the pitch are the attack likely to have less support?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Quins touch Quins touch Rules: On touch, ball carrier must go to ground, roll & lift. After every tackle the attack must make 3 passes before the next tackle or a turnover is awarded. To work on: Continuity, Alignment, Handling. Stretch & Challenge: Team: If defence can come through gate & touch ball on floor (before support) = T/O Individual: Can only take ball at full-speed : If not = T/O. Skill zone: Focus on catch/pass skills and limiting transfer time between catching & the pass: In 4 s, can we make 3 passes before moving 5 metres? Attack focus What do we need to do to give ourselves the best chance of making 3 passes? Can we create & preserve space by our work off the ball? Defence focus How can we best stop them making 3 passes? Which type of defence should we utilise? How could communication help?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games France touch France touch Rules: Touch game with each try scoring 1 point. Coach introduces second ball at any time to simulate a turnover/ transition in play. New attack have 3 phases to score. If score off 1st phase = 3 points, score off 2nd phase = 2 points, score off 3rd phase = 1 point. To work on: Continuity, Scanning, Support, Transition. Stretch & Challenge: Team: One phase to score only after turnover called. Individual: Off T/O you can not touch ball (oppo. unaware) How much space can you create? Skill zone: 3v2 Attack against broken-field defence: Coach calls 1 of 3 coloured cones and defs must touch before they can defend. Attack react to position of defs. Attack focus How can we identify and utilise the space off transition? How do we give ourselves the best chance of scoring off 1st phase turnover ball? Defence focus They only have 3 phases so how will we defend?...aggressively with the aim of getting the ball back early? Or trying to limit their space and make 3 tackles?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Leinster touch Leinster touch Rules: Touch game. First touch tackle = offload, second touch tackle = go to floor and lift. If attack can bounce the ball in to touch from a kick then they can restart with a pass/lineout from that point (if kicked out on the full then turnover is awarded from point where the ball was kicked). To work on: Scanning, kicking skills, Go-forward. Stretch & Challenge: Team: Create coned zones to aim for (could = different things) Individual: Can only kick when they receive ball (kick pass, look for space etc) Skill zone: Kicking skills: Focus on different types of kick (grubber/punt) and where we want to make contact with ball etc. Use cones to create kicking zones. Attack focus How can we give our players time to execute kicks? What are the defence doing to limit our kicking options Will this afford us other go-forward options? Defence focus How can we cover the space to limit attack s kicking options? Do we need to plan so this doesn t leave us vulnerable elsewhere? Why will communication be vital here?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Barbarians touch Barbarians touch Rules: Touch game but live rucks and mauls. Each team only has two phases to score! (Coach creates turnover with second ball if no try is scored on second phase) To work on: Support, Go-forward, Creativity. Stretch & Challenge: Team: If you can run between defenders and commit both, you can offload out of the tackle. Individual: Bonus point if your pass leads to a line-break. Skill zone: Rondo 4 attack v 2 defenders. One try line. If score try, pass back & attack again. Offload out of touch tackle. How many can you score in 1 minute? Attack focus How can we best go- forward?...run, kick, pass, maul? Can you stay alive after making a pass with your work off the ball? How could you attack off first phase? Defence focus How can we apply the most pressure to the attack? (They only have 2 phases!) Will we attack the breakdown to win the turnover, slow the ball down, or just leave it? Why?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Exeter Exeter Rules: Touch or contact game. Attack starts from halfway line (pitch size appropriate to numbers) and a maximum of 10 phases. If score off first phase = 10 points, second phase = 9 points and so on. To work on: Go-forward, Continuity, Contest possession. Stretch & Challenge: Team: Limit number of phases to score or bonus points if you can score from offload Individual: If tackled = lose 3 phases. Skill zone: Decision making & skills at the breakdown: In defence when do we target the ball? In attack how do we get the best ball? Where are we getting info from? Attack focus Why are we always aiming to score off 1st phase? How best to go forward?...run, kick, pass, maul, pick & go? Are we playing off 9 or playing off 10 , or something else? Defence focus How can we apply the most pressure to the attack to make them use more phases? How could we get the ball back?...attack the breakdown, keep players on feet, intercept?
CRFC Skill Games CRFC Skill Games Tonga touch Tonga touch Rules: Attack plays a touch game On touch tackle, attack have two seconds to move ball away. Defence have a different type of ball (football, handball etc) If they touch ball carrier with the defence ball = turnover. To work on: Defensive organisation, communication, scanning, ball movement. Stretch & Challenge: Team: Use smaller ball to develop catch skills (eg. Tennis) Individual: If dominating in defence, 1 or more players can not move with the defence ball. Skill zone: 3 or 4v2 walking touch game. Only defending pair are allowed to communicate (trust inside player/ drift to utilise touchline/ cover space etc) Attack focus As a team, how can we focus on the attack ball at the same time as the defence ball? What do we need to do to move the ball away from the def. ball? Defence focus Will it be quicker to run with or pass the defence ball? How could we outwit our opponents? Could we force them in to a certain pitch area?
