History of the Afrikan Poetry Theater Jamaica, Queens History of the Building Cultural History Business History
History of the Building Built in 1938 after World War II Located on Jamaica Avenue, near the J Train Organized in 1976 to promote Consciousness-Raising Lyrics in their songs
Cultural History of APT IN 1987, the APT director started Journey to the Motherlands tours in West Africa In 1991 they began their Afri-Quest program of 4 week educational programs for HS and College students Adopted a village in the Akuapem area of Ghana The executive director and other prominent members of the APT have been enstooled there Oversees Festem, an arts festival in Senegal
Business History of APT 1977 Incorporated as a Non-Profit Originally located at 89-11 Merrick Blvd from 1978- 1979 In that first year, they had prominent speakers like Dr Yousef Ben-Johanna, Dr John Henrik Clarke, and Rev Herbert Dauhtry After their success, they moved to their current location on 176thand Jamaica Ave

Art Gallery Floor Currently covered by carpeting They want to tile the floor We ll cut the carpet into strips to remove it We ll install the carpet strips into the basement
Theatre of the Oppressed A progressive theatre troupe focused on telling the stories of people without a lot of power Working with us about the experiences we have with the police and stop and frisk We ll be working with them once a week until a series of performances in 2014 We hope one performance is in the Afrikan Poetry Theatre
