  6. Residents future plans

  7. Residents future plans Within the next 3 months, the majority of residents plan to visit a park or outside space, and meet with family and friends (both inside or outside), with approximately half looking forward to doing so. Less than half plan to undertake active travel, or take part in individual physical activity or sport alone or with others (both inside or outside) within the next 3 months. The majority of residents do not plan to take part in team sports either inside or outside in the future. 8. Future plans vs previous activity

  9. Visiting a park or outside space Of the 54% of residents looking forward to this activity, the majority were residents who had done this regularly (49 residents) or those who sometimes did this (33) prior to COVID-19. I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this 54% 49 33 2 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 7 residents who did not do this previously, planned to do so in the next 3 months (partially explained below). 30% 16 26 5 I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future A lower proportion of residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness regardless of whether it substantially impacted on their daily life (35%) or not (36%) were looking forward to doing this in the next 3 months compared with those who had no disability, mental health issue or illness (67%). Instead, a higher proportion of these residents are cautious, do not plan to so in the next 3 months, are unsure or do not plan to do it in the future. 6% 8 I am not sure 4% 3 4 I do not plan to do this in the future 5% 6 Numbers on the bars represent the number of residents in each sub-category. The percentage shows the overall proportion for the category on the left. Encouragingly, 4 out of the 11 residents with issues that substantially impact on their daily lives who previously did not do this activity, now plan to do so within the next 3 months. I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. As COVID-19 restrictions start to ease, which aspects of normal life are you planning to engage in over the next 3 months if restrictions continue to be eased in line with Government expectations? Please state if you did this activity prior to COVID-19 restrictions being in place at the start of the pandemic (March 2020) & your plans for this activity now. N=156

  10. Meeting family or friends outside I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this Of the 53% of residents looking forward to this activity, the majority were residents who had done this regularly (59 residents) or those who sometimes did this (22 residents) prior to COVID-19. 53% 59 22 2 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 33% 27 22 3 5 residents who did not do this previously, planned to do so in the next 3 months. I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 7% 3 6 2 A higher proportion of residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness that substantially impacted on their daily life (15%) were not sure about doing this compared with those who had no disability, mental health issue or illness (2%). 11. Meeting family or friends indoors I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this Of the 45% of residents looking forward to this activity, the majority were residents who had done this regularly (59 residents) or those who sometimes did this (7) prior to COVID-19 . 45% 59 7 4 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 42% 41 19 5 9 residents who did not do this previously planned to do this in the next 3 months. I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 4% 6 A higher proportion of residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness that substantially impacted on their daily life (15%) were not sure about doing this compared with those who had no disability, mental health issue or illness (1%). I am not sure 6% 3 5 I do not plan to do this in the future 3% 3 I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. 12. Actively travelling to work/college/university I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this Of the 47% of residents who did not plan to do this in the future, the majority were residents who had not done this prior to COVID-19 (70 residents). 26% 29 6 6 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 13% 7 12 2 Of the 26% who were looking forward to doing this in the next 3 months, the majority had done this regularly prior to COVID-19 (29 residents). I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 6% 2 8 I am not sure 6% 2 1 7 8 residents who did not do this previously, planned to do this in the next 3 months and a further 8 planned to do so in the longer term. I do not plan to do this in the future 47% 1 3 70 I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. 13. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport with others which takes place outside (e.g. running or walking group) Of the 42% of residents who did not plan to do this in the future, the majority were residents who had not done this prior to COVID-19 (59 residents). I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this 22% 18 12 5 8 residents who did not do this previously, planned to do this in the next 3 months and a further 9 planned to do so in the longer term (partially explained below). I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 15% 9 11 3 A higher proportion of residents aged 65+ (67%) did not plan to do this in the future, compared with those aged 25-44 (34%) and 16-24 (25%). Whilst a similar proportion of those aged 65+ did not do this prior to COVID-19 (suggesting no change), a higher proportion of those in the younger age categories are planning to do this but did not do this activity prior to COVID-19. I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 13% 12 9 I am not sure 8% 3 8 A higher proportion of residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness that substantially impacted on their daily life (18%) were unsure about their plans to do this activity compared with those who had no disability, mental health issue or illness (3%). However, 75% of these residents did not previously do this but only 55% planned not to do so in the future again suggesting some changes. I do not plan to do this in the future 42% 2 4 59 I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. As COVID-19 restrictions start to ease, which aspects of normal life are you planning to engage in over the next 3 months if restrictions continue to be eased in line with Government expectations? 14. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport with others which takes place outside: further insights The majority of residents who used to do this but were now unsure (2 residents), and those who planned to do so in the next 3 months but felt cautious about it (14 residents) cited COVID-19 concerns as their reason for trepidation. Such concerns included mixing with other people, trusting other people to follow the rules, maintaining social distancing, hygiene concerns regarding any equipment they might use (although to a lesser extent than for activities undertaken inside), catching COVID-19 and spreading it further. I am cautious as I have been shielding so taking place in activities that include others even in open areas increases my risk of COVID as you don't know how they have followed the guidelines. I want to make sure all the appropriate cautions are in place. I feel I'll also be a tad wary about doing such things to begin when normal life resumes and I get used to getting my pre-covid life back. Those who planned to do so over a longer timeframe most commonly referenced similar COVID-19 concerns (7 residents), having other priorities such as work or family commitments (4 residents), and undertaking other types of physical activity (3 residents). I prefer to exercise alone in my home as I do yoga and body balance, I struggle with work restrictions for getting to classes for what I like to do Residents who no longer planned to do this in the future, but previously did, referenced other priorities (2 residents), and undertaking other types of physical activity (2 residents). I plan on doing lots of fun things with my baby who was born on lockdown first. Q2. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport with others that takes place outside (e.g. a running or walking group). Please describe why you: do not plan to do this in the future (n=6)/do not plan to do this in the next 3 months (n=21)/are cautious about doing this in the next 3 months (n=23)/are not sure about doing this in the next 3 months (n=3)

  15. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport which takes place inside (e.g. gym or swimming) Of the 40% of residents who did not plan to do this in the future, the majority were residents who had not done this prior to COVID-19 (54 residents). I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this 24% 21 12 4 8 residents who did not do this previously, planned to do this in the next 3 months and a further 9 planned to do so in the longer term (partially explained below) I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 18% 13 11 4 I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 13% 3 8 9 A higher proportion of residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness that substantially impacted on their daily life (55%) did not plan to do this in the future compared with those who had no disability, mental health issue or illness (33%). A similar pattern existed prior to COVID-19. I am not sure 5% 3 3 I do not plan to do this in the future 40% 4 5 54 Encouragingly, 7 of the 27 residents with health issues that substantially impact their daily lives who previously did not do this activity, now plan to do so at some point in the future. N=156

  16. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport which takes place inside: further insights All residents who used to do this but were now unsure (5 residents), and the majority who planned to do so in the next 3 moths but felt cautious about it (19 residents) again cited COVID-19 concerns. Such concerns particularly related to mixing with other people in a confined space, trusting other people to follow the rules, maintaining social distancing, hygiene concerns about any equipment used, and ultimately catching COVID-19. I think there might be asymptomatic carriers, the risk of being close to other people and I m worried about catching COVID-19. And I m concerned equipment and swimming pools won t be cleaned properly. Those who planned to do so over a longer timeframe most commonly referenced similar COVID-19 concerns (6 residents), undertaking other types of physical activity (3 residents), and having other priorities such as work or family commitments (3 residents). I prefer to exercise in the fresh air. Don t want to be in a sweaty gym. Residents who no longer planned to do this in the future, but previously did, referenced current health barriers that prevented them from doing so (3 residents) and similar COVID-19 concerns (3 residents). I will always be cautious now wherever I go as lock down lifts, don't want get covid, had lung surgery in December 2020, I wouldn't survive getting it. Q2. Taking part in an individual physical activity or sport that takes place in an inside venue (e.g. going to the gym or swimming). Please describe why you: do not plan to do this in the future (n=9)/do not plan to do this in the next 3 months (n=20)/are cautious about doing this in the next 3 months (n=28)/are not sure about doing this in the next 3 months (n=5)

  17. Taking part in a team sport which takes place outside (e.g. football, netball, hockey) I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this The majority of residents (74%) did not plan to do team sport outside in the future, and most of these residents did not undertake this activity prior to COVID- 19 (113 residents). 6% 3 5 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 6% 4 6 I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 9% 13 13 residents who did not do this previously were planning to do so in the longer term. I am not sure 5% 4 A slightly higher proportion of males (11%) were looking forward to undertaking team sport outside within the next 3 months compared with females (3%) reflecting differences found in their participation pre-COVID-19. I do not plan to do this in the future 74% 113 I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. N=156

  18. Taking part in a team sport which takes place outside: further insights The majority of residents who used to do this but were now unsure (2 residents), and those who planned to do so in the next 3 moths but felt cautious about it (6 residents) cited COVID-19 again as their reason. Such concerns included being in close proximity to other people, trusting other people to follow the rules, maintaining social distancing, catching COVID-19 and spreading it further. Usually involves people I do not know, therefore do not know whether they have been sensible and/or safe surrounding the COVID restrictions. Those who planned to do so over a longer timeframe most commonly referenced that they had not previously participated in team sports, had not been interested in it in the past and had no immediate desire to do so (8 residents), indicating that they could possibly be swayed moving forward, but this seems unlikely. A further 3 residents cited current health barriers. It's not something I did before so I don't plan on doing so in the near future. I have back problems and have to be careful which fitness activities I take part in. Q2. Taking part in a team sport that takes place outside (e.g. football, netball, hockey). Please describe why you: do not plan to do this in the future (n=2)/do not plan to do this in the next 3 months (n=14)/are cautious about doing this in the next 3 months (n=10)/are not sure about doing this in the next 3 months (n=4)

  19. Taking part in a team sport which takes place inside (e.g. badminton, basketball, table tennis) The majority of residents (77%) did not plan to do team sport inside in the future, and all 120 of these residents did not undertake this activity prior to COVID-19. I plan to do this in the next 3 months and I am looking forward to doing this 4% 5 I plan to do this in the next 3 months but I am cautious about it 6% 262 8 residents who did not do this previously were planning to do so in the longer term and 7 were unsure (partially explained below). I do not plan to do this in the next 3 months but will in the future 6% 8 I am not sure 6% 7 A higher proportion of older residents aged 65+ (96%) did not plan to undertake team sport inside compared with those aged 25-44 (67%) and 16-24 (56%). Whilst a similar proportion of those aged 65+ did not do this prior to COVID-19, a higher proportion of those in the younger age categories who did not do this and are now planning to do so. I do not plan to do this in the future 77% 120 I regularly did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions (more than once a week) I sometimes did this prior to COVID-19 restrictions I did not do this prior to COVID-19 restrictions/Not applicable Q1. N=156

  20. Taking part in a team sport which takes place inside (e.g. badminton, basketball, table tennis) All residents who used to do this but were now unsure (2 residents), and those who planned to do so in the next 3 moths but felt cautious about it (5 residents) cited COVID-19 concerns. Such concerns included hygiene concerns about equipment used, being in close proximity to other people in a confined space, trusting other people to follow the rules, maintaining social distancing, catching COVID-19 and spreading it further. I need assurance that stuff is going to be clean. Those who planned to do so over a longer timeframe most commonly referenced that they had not previously participated in team sports, and had not been interested in them in the past (4 residents), indicating that there might be some possibility to sway them moving forward, but this seems unlikely. A further 3 residents cited COVID-19 concerns as a barrier. Being in an environment that people are sweating and in a hot environment with a lack of ventilation can increase the risk of COVID. Therefore, I aim to avoid those areas and would prefer to be outside, especially as summer comes. Q2. Taking part in a team sport that takes place outside (e.g. football, netball, hockey). Please describe why you: do not plan to do this in the future (n=0)/do not plan to do this in the next 3 months (n=10)/are cautious about doing this in the next 3 months (n=10)/are not sure about doing this in the next 3 months (n=2)

  21. Key insights

  22. So, what does this mean? Generally, the majority of residents were planning to visit a park or open space once COVID-19 restrictions lifted. The majority were also planning to meet their family or friends, but fewer residents were planning to undertake physical activity outside or inside (excluding in their own house or garden) particularly team sports. However, it is important to note that the majority of residents did not participate in team sports prior to COVID-19. A small proportion of residents who did not previously do specific activities, are now more open to doing so. Residents with a disability, mental health issue or illness, and those aged 65+ are more cautious about taking part in a range of activities as COVID-19 restrictions are eased. Whilst these individuals were less likely to do these activities prior to COVID-19, they are more likely to consider doing them now than they were prior to COVID-19. COVID-19 concerns dominate the reasons why residents are either cautious about undertaking physical activity or sport, plan to wait longer or are unsure about their future plans for doing such activities moving forward (amongst those who used to do these activities). Whilst some individuals are worried about mixing with others, it appears to be influenced by them not knowing how strictly people will/or have been following the rules this is often centred on social distancing and hygiene particularly when undertaking physical activity inside. Considering how to encourage individuals to take part in physical activity when visiting the park and meeting family and friends may be a way of overcoming this although many are still cautious about doing this. Health barriers, other priorities and undertaking alternative means of physical activity are the other main reasons that residents are hesitant about undertaking physical activity or sport which does not relate specifically to COVID-19.

  23. Appendix 1: Breakdown by disability

  24. Behaviour prior to COVID-19 by disability Data presented in the following tables shows the breakdown by disability as most of the variables were statistically significant.
