Remote Learning Parent Orientation 2020 2021 School Year
Welcome The ACS Remote Learning Plan relies on the continuing partnership of our dedicated faculty, motivated and engaged students, and committed parents. Teachers and Facilitators will provide opportunities that encourage students to explore, create, play, read, write, share ideas, and move. The focus will be to maintain ongoing and inclusive communication where students, parents, and teachers feel connected, valued, and appreciated.
What to expect from teachers/ facilitators? Teachers/ Facilitators will Make remote learning activities available in a timely manner. Be available at scheduled times to answer student/caregiver questions. Provide feedback on student work. Communicate regularly with students. Provide a range of meaningful learning opportunities that meet the needs of all learners during the period of closure.
What to expect: Contact, support, and feedback Teachers will use video conferencing through WebEx to connect with students and families to support learning and social-emotional wellbeing. Additionally, teachers may hold mini- meets (with small groups of students) as well as whole class meetings to enable live connection and maintain the sense of classroom community. You can expect a check-in at least twice a week from one of your children s teachers. Students will also be invited to share their learning through photographs, pictures, and screenshots. Teachers will be available throughout the school day from 8 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. They will regularly check their emails during this time and will arrange a time to talk directly and support students or parents\guardians.
What is expected of Remote Learning Students? Login and engage daily. Review assigned work. Attend required WebEx learning meetings. Complete your assigned work by the due date. Ask clarifying questions when you need help. Reach out and request support of Remote Learning Teachers. Be respectful to yourself, teachers and peers.
Student Expectations for WebEx Log in promptly, via teacher invitation, using a code or url. Enter the virtual meeting space prepared for the lesson, activity, or meeting with books, paper, writing utensil, any other materials requested by the teacher. Enter the virtual meeting space prepared for the lesson, activity, or meeting properly attired, mentally present, and in a distraction free area. Follow the teacher s rules and code of conduct.
What is expected of students? Attendance A student participating in the virtual education option will be considered as being in attendance if the student is successfully progressing in the virtual education coursework. (ACS Board Policy 7.14.4) Notify the teacher(s) of any absence from remote learning.
Preparing for the First Day of Remote School Participate in Meet the Teacher. Make sure your child joins the WebEx Meeting on Monday, August 10that 8:30a.m. Establish a distraction free learning environment. Ensure all devices used are charged and properly connected to WIFI.
What is expected of parent/guardians of remote students? Review work assigned to the student. Reserve a space for students to complete remote learning work. Encourage students to get enough sleep. Set sensible time limits for technology use. Talk to students about their work every day. Help students establish and follow regular daily routines. Allow students to complete quizzes/tests independently without support. Provide encouragement and support in communicating with teachers. Notify the teacher(s) of any absence from remote learning.
Technology Guidelines and Procedures
Technology Reminders Parents communicated device and internet access need upon enrolling in remote learning. Students and families should refer to the Responsible Use Policies to ensure safe and appropriate device use. Students should adhere to the ACS iPad handbook agreement. We strongly recommend that when a student is using a device, they do so in a public space with adult supervision. Students are expected to use their devices appropriately and safely.
Technology Remote learning requires the use of technology to deliver instruction, to monitor learning and to communicate with students and families. We ask for patience from families and students and will give patience to families and students as we collectively navigate Remote Learning in a technology environment. A technology help desk is available so that students and families can reach out to ACS staff. A Parent and Student Resource Page is available for families to use throughout the semester. These resources explain how to use various platforms used in Remote Learning. Remote Learning Resource Page Potential Digital Platforms that students will access during remote learning: Email Websites and other browser-based activities Microsoft Office 365 Webex Schoology or Seesaw Nearpod Clever iPad Apps
Learning Management Systems Remote Learning teachers will primarily use the learning management system-Schoology to deliver content and to communicate with students. All students K-12 are provided a student email address inside Office 365 that can be used to communicate with ACS staff.
Curriculum, Grades and State Assessment
Curriculum K-5 Remote Learning Curriculum, Grades K-5 Just as teachers do in Traditional Learning, teachers in Remote Learning may use a variety of curriculum resources to deliver effective instruction. Most of the resources used in a traditional setting have an online component that can be used and shared by teachers. These resources might include the following: SchoolsPLP, the digital curriculum purchased by the Alabama State Department of Education for grades K-7. Wonders, the K-5 ELA curriculum use. Go Math, the K-5 math curriculum used by ACS in Traditional Learning. Stem Scopes, the K-5 science curriculum used by ACS in Traditional Learning
Grades Individual student performance will be monitored pursuant to the school system s traditional academic credit requirements and grade scale (ACS Board Policy 7.14.3). Students will complete assignments throughout the semester and be given appropriate feedback. Parents and students in grades 3-12 can see grade progress in iNow throughout the quarter/semester. Summative feedback/quarterly or semester grades will be provided through the means below: Grades 3-7: Parent iNow Portal
Make-up Work In order to maintain pacing, assignments will be given a deadline. Students and families should communicate openly and clearly with teachers about missed assignments or missed deadlines. Students are entitled to make up any work missed under certain circumstances, including illness. Remote Learning Teachers will allow a reasonable amount of time for the student to make up his/her work. Stay in communication with teachers.!
State Assessments Students in Remote Learning are required to complete all required state assessments. Most of the required assessments can be completed in a remote setting. However, the school system reserves the right to require students utilizing the virtual education option to participate in state testing and accountability requirements on campus at a date and time selected by the school system. (ACS Board Policy 7.14.3). Students and families will be notified in a timely manner about state assessments, their modes of completion and location requirements, if any.
Accommodations Students who have an active IEP or 504 will receive accommodations as stated in their most recent IEP/504 plan. EL students as well as students who qualify for Venture Pull-Out will be provided support in learning throughout the year.
