WHAT ARE WE GOING TO LEARN? In this lesson, we ll explore the meaning of consent, learn strategies around giving or seeking consent, and look at some real-life examples. 2
RESPECT. YOUR RULES. Today, we re going to be talking about sensitive topics. It s really important that we all show each other respect. Use some of the words below to write your own three rules that you d like everyone to follow. HEAR RESPECT KIND EMPATHY SENSITIVITY LISTEN UNDERSTAND SPEAK Let s share and agree on our ground rules. 3

ACTIVITY 1 WHAT IS CONSENT? 6
DEFINING CONSENT How would you define consent? Discuss with someone else. Legal definition (Sexual Offences Act 2003) A person consents if he agrees by choice, and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice Remember: anyone can offer, withhold or withdraw consent at any time and for any activity (sexual or otherwise). What could affect someone s freedom and capacity to choose? 7
USING CONSENT There are four main actions a person can take around consent. With a partner, take it in turns to use these four actions to borrow or lend a pen. SEEK WITHHOLD GIVE WITHDRAW Can you get them to give consent, or persuade them to change their mind? 8
CONSENT AND LANGUAGE SEEK WITHHOLD GIVE WITHDRAW What are some of the phrases you used to seek, give, withhold or withdraw consent? How did it feel when your partner tried to persuade you to give consent, or change your mind? Is it ok to do this when thinking about sexual consent? 9
CONSENT AND BODY LANGUAGE Maybe If you asked for consent and were given the following answers, what would that mean? Ok, I suppose Try saying them with your partner. How could your body language or facial expression change the meaning? I m not sure I ll think about it 10
CONSENT AND BODY LANGUAGE In pairs, act out this exchange between two people in a relationship. A: I really like this photo I took of you. You look great. Can I post it online? B: Um Do it several times, using different tones of voice, facial expressions and gestures to give it different meanings. A: Come on, it s such a nice picture. You should be proud. B: I m not sure. How does this affect if consent was given? A: Ok, well it s up to you. B: Yeah, I suppose you can. 11
CONSENT HOW TO BE SURE When it comes to consent, you need to be sure. The golden rule is, if you're not sure it's a yes, THEN IT'S A NO. 12

IS IT CONSENT? Scenario 1 Mark sends a sexy text message to Priya, which makes her feel uncomfortable. She asks him to stop and he sends another one. 15
IS IT CONSENT? Scenario 2 Ajay asks Ben if he can touch Ben s body. Ben smiles and says yes . 16
IS IT CONSENT? Scenario 3 Aimee asks Joanna if they can have sex. Joanna says yes but is frowning and not making eye contact with Aimee. 17
IS IT CONSENT? ACTIVITY SHEET Complete the rest of the Is It Consent? Activity Sheet to show whether or not consent is being given. Be ready to justify your ideas to the class. Extension: in the examples, is there anyone who does not have the freedom or capacity to consent? 18
GIVING ADVICE ON CONSENT In pairs, choose one of the scenarios where consent is not being given. What advice would you give them? You can share your advice with the class if you would like to. To learn more about healthy and unhealthy relationships, watch this video. 19

GETTING HELP It s important to get help when you need it and to stop any form of bullying or abuse in its tracks. If you, or someone you know, have any concerns about consent, or encounter problems online, you should: Speak to a trusted adult. Speak to a teacher. Go to childline.com a free service for young people. 23
